Press release —
Autumn 2026 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg
This autumn, Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents three solo exhibitions by Amalie Smith, Jochen Lempert and Som Supaparinya. Across installation, photography and video, the artists explore the relationships between people, nature, knowledge and the structures that shape contemporary society.
The exhibition programme brings together artists whose practices intersect art, research and society in different ways. Visitors can experience Amalie Smith’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date; Jochen Lempert’s first solo exhibition in Denmark; and Som Supaparinya’s first solo exhibition in Scandinavia.
“Amalie Smith, Jochen Lempert and Som Supaparinya represent three distinctive artistic practices that each explore fundamental questions about how we understand ourselves and the world around us. Although they work across very different media and perspectives, they share an interest in the relationships between people, nature, knowledge and society. Together, their exhibitions demonstrate how art can sharpen our awareness of the connections and structures that shape contemporary life,” says Helene Nyborg Bay, Director of Kunsthal Charlottenborg.
Together, the exhibitions unfold as a season in which the material traces of life, the patterns of nature, and the imprints of history offer new perspectives on the connections that shape our contemporary world. From biological processes and attentive observations of everyday life to landscapes marked by power and geopolitics, the artists turn their attention to the forces that connect people to their surroundings.
Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s exhibitions in 2026 are generously supported by the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation, the Augustinus Foundation, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, the Danish Arts Foundation, the Lemvigh-Müller Foundation, the New Carlsberg Foundation, and the Obel Family Foundation.
Kunsthal Charlotenborg celebrates the opening of the autumn exhibitions on 25 September 2026.
As part of the autumn season, Kunsthal Charlottenborg will also inaugurate a new foyer developed in collaboration with Atelier Axo. The transformation reimagines the entrance area as an open and welcoming space that supports encounters between audiences, art and institution.
Amalie Smith: Levende
26 September 2026 – 21 February 2027
Danish visual artist and author Amalie Smith (b. 1985) presents her most extensive solo exhibition to date, featuring new works created specifically for the North Wing of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Through a series of sculptural installations and an immersive sound work, Smith explores the emergence of life and the material processes, patterns, and traces through which living beings leave their mark on the world.
The exhibition unfolds through a series of large display cases containing hybrid sculptures composed of textiles, ceramics, natural materials, and everyday objects. As if viewed through a microscope, Smith brings into focus the connections between nature, human life, science, art, and artificial life.
Drawing on a multidisciplinary practice that brings together literature, research, and visual art, Amalie Smith examines the grand narratives of life on Earth while zooming in on living matter across past, present, and future. Further info here
Jochen Lempert
26 September 2026 – 21 February 2027
German artist Jochen Lempert (b. 1958) presents his first solo exhibition in Denmark, featuring works from a practice spanning more than three decades. Trained as a biologist, he blends scientific observation with artistic vision, transforming details and patterns of nature into analogue black-and-white photographs that reveal the poetry of everyday life.
Lempert’s works invite careful and attentive observation of our surroundings, encouraging us to slow down and appreciate the often-overlooked subtleties of the natural world. Through unframed photographs arranged in constellations that reveal connections between plants, animals, objects and people, the exhibition creates a space for contemplation and sensory exploration, reminding us of our shared connection to all living things.
Lempert has exhibited at major international institutions worldwide and is represented in collections including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Further info here
Som Supaparinya: Reroute:
26 September 2026 – 21 February 2027
Thai visual artist Som Supaparinya (b. 1973) presents her first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. Through video installations and research-based works, she examines how infrastructure, landscapes and political alliances shape collective memory and continue to influence societies and ecosystems across Southeast Asia.
Internationally recognised for her investigations into the relationships between geography, history and power, Supaparinya brings together recent works that reveal layers of unknown (hi)stories, lasting environmental traces and often forgotten places.
Curated by Natalie Keppler, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how historical and political structures continue to influence the world we inhabit today. Further info here
