Simon Dybbroe Møller presents his most extensive solo exhibition to date

Simon Dybbroe Møller
Thick & Thin
8 June – 11 August 2024

This summer, visitors to Kunsthal Charlottenborg will be treated to the largest-ever institutional solo presentation of the work of Danish artist Simon Dybbroe Møller. Thick & Thin will present works from the last twenty years of the internationally acclaimed artist’s conceptual and rigorous practice – through thick and thin, as it were. The title hints at the pairing of sculpture (thick) and image (thin) as well as to Dybbroe Møller’s preoccupation with the real, the organic, the heavy and its representation.

Simon Dybbroe Møller creates works that complicate the relationship between the event and its documentation, our relationship to the ‘authentic’ and the original. He has brought the Grauballe Man to life, exhibited empty, dusty watch display towers in a shop and interpreted children’s book classics in an updated language that matches contemporary times.

One of the distinctive features of his practice is his non-hierarchical approach to artistic production; he works with film, photography, found objects, installation, sculpture, performance, text, curation and teaching, regarding them all as equally valuable and important. Dybbroe Møller is a prominent exponent of an art that emphasises connection, juxtaposition and networks. His works engage in a constant interaction between the thick and the thin, between palpable qualities such as the material and weight of sculpture and the mediation and representation of images.

Thick & Thin is a tour de force exploring representation’s ability to produce emotional spaces. Presented in Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s large south wing, the solo exhibition is curated by Krist Gruijthuijsen, director of the KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin, in close collaboration with the artist.

The exhibition is supported by The Augustinus Foundation, The Beckett Foundation, The New Carlsberg Foundation, The Danish Arts Foundation, The Obel Family Foundation, The William Demant Foundation.
