Pressemeddelelse -

Green Day, Weezer, Lukas Graham and Mew will play NorthSide 2020

NorthSide is announcing its first headliners, who will be joined by Weezer, Mew and sublime Danish female artists, Mags and Mekdes.

After an amazing NorthSide 2019, the festival is setting its sight on 2020. Early Bird tickets for next year’s festival were sold out at a record pace, and the official ticket sale kicked off on October 1st. Now NorthSide is also announcing its first round of acts.

We must go all the way back to 2013 in order to experience Green Day on Danish soil. Consequently, many fans were highly disappointed, when there were no performances scheduled in Denmark for the world tour, which has just been announced along with Weezer and Fall Out Boy. Fortunately, fans in Denmark now get the opportunity to experience both Green Day and Weezer, when they go on stage at NorthSide 2020.

Green Day broke through the international sound barrier in 1994 with the album, “Dookie”, and singles such as “When I Come Around’”, “Basket Case” and “Longview” went straight to the top of the charts worldwide. In 2004 Green Day released their seventh album “American Idiot”. The title track “American Idiot” and singles such as "Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams" received massive international acclaim, and took Green Day from being “angry skater punks” to being a band with a political voice and more than 70 million albums sold. In September the band dropped the first single for their thirteenth studio album, “Father of All ...”, which is set to be released in 2020.

California-based Weezer also took the opportunity to announce their fourteenth studio album “Van Weezer” in connection with the before-mentioned world tour. The album is set to be released in May 2020, and less than a month later the band will take the stage at NorthSide. By then it will be 28 years since the band played their first concert on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, where they already from the beginning were recognized for a positive sound, in contrast with the gloomy grunge theme of the 1990s. In 1994 their debut album ‘The Blue Album’ was released, and shortly after the world got to know the band as well-dressed nerds in the music video for the megahit ‘Buddy Holly’. The single was followed by hits such as ‘Undone – The Sweater Song’, ‘Pork And Beans’, ‘Hash Pipes’ and ‘Beverly Hills’, which was the band’s first single on Billboard’s Top 100.

Since the debut “Ordinary Things” Danish Lukas Graham has taken the world by storm at an impressive pace. Lukas Graham is, in lead singer Lukas Forchhammer’s own words, “ghetto pop with a touch of soul”, and you don’t have to listen for long to “Mama Said”, “Drunk in the Morning” or “When You Love Someone” in order to recognize his description. In 2016, the single ‘7 Years’ paved the way for a massive worldwide breakthrough. The band’s international debut album went to the Top 10 in 11 countries and has been awarded with ten times platinum. Lukas Graham has additionally been nominated for three American Grammys: “Record of the Year”, “Song of the Year” for “7 Years” and “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance”.

2020 is the year Mew will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the award-winning album ‘And The Glass Handed Kites’, which seriously kick-started an international career for the trio with gigantic hits such as “Apocalypso”, “The Zookeeper’s Boy” and the sublime “Special”. The record ensured the band all of four Danish Music Awards. Since then, they have released six studio albums, most recently ‘Visuals’ from 2017. Especially characteristic for Mew is a combination of a detailed and grandiose sound in stark contrast to lead singer Jonas Bjerre’s almost innocent and gentle vocals. Mew repeatedly manages to sneak under the skin of the audience, and we are very much looking forward to a long-awaited visit from the band at NorthSide 2020.
Mew will play NorthSide Saturday, June 6th

It is with great pride that NorthSide welcomes two of Danish music’s greatest, female artists currently.
At only 21 years old, the natural talent Mekdes, has already established herself as a marvellous live performer, whom Denmark should pay close attention to. Hits like “Out of Here”, “On My Mind” and her latest single “Lose a Minute” are heavily inspired by R‘n’B and soul artists such as Jorja Smith, Kehlani, NAO and Billie Eilish, and with her utterly beautiful vocal, which embrace both velvety lightness and raw strength, Mekdes delivers both lyrics and tunes of highest international standard.

Danish Mags has just released her debut EP, “Conversations I’ve Had With Myself”; an honest gem, which has seriously peaked our curiosity about, what the future might bring for her. The just 23-year-old talent finds inspiration in Scandinavian female artists such as Sigrid and Mø. And although the lyrics in the singles “You’re in his bed”, I’m in his head”, “I Never Really Liked Your Friends” and “Play it Cool” are based on the artist’s deepest, personal thoughts and feelings, she communicates them in a musical landscape of electropop, which leave few people standing still.

-The first round of artists accurately represents, how the music programme at NorthSide is supposed to be: a solid line-up of iconic international headliners, side by side with some of the biggest young talents in Danish music, who we predict will be the sound of tomorrow. There are many more names and experiences to be announced for the 2020 poster, but with these artists we have made an excellent start,” says NorthSide festival director, Brian Nielsen.

NorthSide afholdes i Eskelunden, Aarhus
