Canon Young People Programme inspired Estonian youth through photography with Annika Haas

From June 16 to 18, Canon, in collaboration with local partner Overall, hosted a three-day Canon Young People workshop in Tallinn, bringing together local youth to explore the power of visual storytelling through photography. The workshop was led by Estonian Canon Ambassador Annika Haas, whose expertise guided participants through both the technical and conceptual aspects of photographic narrative.

Over the course of three days, participants engaged in hands-on exercises designed to sharpen their visual awareness, develop their personal voice, and understand photography as a tool for both self-expression and social commentary.

Day 1 – photography and ethics
The workshop began with an introduction to photography as a medium for communication and change. Discussions focused on the emotional and narrative power of images, as well as the ethical responsibilities of photographers, particularly when working with sensitive subjects.

Day 2 – practice and creativity
Participants took part in practical assignments, including repeated photography of everyday objects to enhance observation skills. Documentary and portrait exercises emphasized respectful engagement with subjects and the importance of trust. The structure of a photo series and visual coherence were also explored.

Day 3 – editing and presentation
The final day focused on curating and presenting a visual story. Participants selected their strongest images, analyzed their impact, and prepared a small exhibition. Group discussions explored future opportunities for sharing their work, from exhibitions to social media.

Sustainability and impact

Annika Haas introduced her project “Greenhouse Effect”, which explores environmentally conscious lifestyles among youth and the role of photography in raising awareness. The workshop encouraged a slower, more thoughtful approach to photography—one that fosters deeper connections with people and the environment.
