Meanwhile in Rovaniemi Arctic Circle

April in Lapland Rovaniemi offers sunny beach vibes, as the spring sun reflects from pure white snow. Local ice swimmer dazzled near city centre on a sunny April Monday. Part of the Rovaniemi state of mind is that mondays do not need to be gray and that we Lappish do not take ourselves too seriously.

Rovaniemi April is a month of contrast

All four or even eight seasons are clearly present in the annual cycle of Rovaniemi, each with their own distinct characteristics. Winters are cold, summers warm, autumns shine in bright colours and springs are light-filled due to sun reflecting from bright white snow.

Lapland spring offers a walkable snow crust

Rovaniemi offers nature magic all year round, what you wish to experience during your stay in Lapland determines when you should travel to Rovaniemi. April is a phenomenon on its own, by offering days warm between 10 – 15 degrees, with a real feel of 20 degrees in straight sunlight, yet habituated in night temperatures below zero. This unique annual effect creates a walkable snow crust, that allows you to roam places you normally couldn´t, like frozen marsh and peatland areas.

The locals are infatuated by the light after Polar Night

After winter and the Polar Night, locals infatuated by the light embrace the spring with open arms. In Rovaniemi April is still a season for winter activities, thus you will get to enjoy husky rides and snowmobiling on snow and get to enjoy the warmth of spring sunlight. The Northern Lights are still visible in April and begin to gradually vanish as the sky yields for the Midnight Sun season.

The ice breaks it marks a new beginning for the nature and locals

Spring time in Lapland Rovaniemi is marked by the ice breaking of Ounasjoki and Kemijoki rivers in April-May. Flowers and plants show signs of life again after being buried under snow for months, reindeer start calving, days get increasingly longer, the nights begin to disappear – and the locals become infatuated with light.

Typical April temperature in Rovaniemi is between 5°C to 15°C.

In Rovaniemi it is always ice cream weather

The laid-back attitude of Rovaniemi must be world-famous by now, for Rovaniemi is the second most international destination in Finland after Helsinki the capital of Finland. It is very characteristic for the local Rovaniemi state of mind, to think it is always a good beach weather, and that a slushy day is just perfect for eating a cold ice cream cone on the city beach - and that we Lappish do not take ourselves too seriously.
