University of Gävle provides professional development to specialists in basic industry

The University of Gävle and Luleå University of Technology will collaborate on developing courses for lifelong learning in Swedish basic industry.

Basic industries need professional development

To meet the challenges of the digital development and Industry 4.0, professionals within basic industries need to renew their skills and deepen their knowledge. For this reason, the University of Gävle and Luleå University of Technology

will develop a joint package of courses in efficient production processes, maintenance and applied artificial intelligence (AI).

“Both Luleå and Gävle are surrounded by large basic industries and it will strengthen us both when we highlight our excellent competencies in offering needs-based and flexible courses to the industry,” says Magnus Lemoine, project manager at the University of Gävle.

“We believe in close collaboration with the industry and participant-driven learning, and we would also like to try ingredients of gamification in the digital environment,” says Niclas Björsell, senior lecturer in electronics at the University of Gävle.

Continuing professional development grows in importance

Continuing professional development is growing in importance for Sweden’s competitiveness and innovation capacity. For this reason, Vinnova, Sweden’s innovation agency, invests 4,5 million SEK in the project in which the two universities will develop short, flexible courses for specialists in basic industry.

“The development is extremely fast within a number of fields and more opportunities for professional development are needed than we have today. It is crucial for Sweden’s international competitiveness that companies and other organisation have access to the right skills and innovation capacity,” says Maria Landgren, chief strategy officer, in a press release from Vinnova.
