Press release -

Northvolt opens R&D facility in the Stockholm Region

The city of Västerås, west of Stockholm, has been chosen as the location where Northvolt will place their R&D facility for the next generation lithium-ion batteries. This is the fourth major investment in the Stockholm Region in the past six months, creating another 300 to 400 jobs in Västerås.

- This shows that Västerås is, and continues to develop, a dynamic place for innovation and excellence in technology and modern industry. Now that Northvolt is coming here with its research and development of the world’s greenest battery, we are taking another historic step towards solving global challenges, says Anders Teljebäck, Chairman of the Municipal Council in Västerås.

- Västerås is in the forefront of research in energy, which is why we are investing in a research facility in Västerås. Electrification and storage of renewable energy is the key to a carbon neutral society, and we have been welcomed with great enthusiasm in Skellefteå and Västerås, who have really shown that they will be important players in the global energy conversion, says Peter Carlsson, CEO, Northvolt.

- This is yet another example of the Stockholm Region attracting innovative companies that are paving the way towards a sustainable future. In the past six months, the Stockholm Region has proved its place in the global arena with the establishment of Zalando, Amazon Web Services, Rockwool and now Northvolt, says Anna Gissler, CEO, Invest Stockholm.

Northvolt’s objective is to build the world’s greenest battery, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy.
