The Politecnico di Milano is once again ranked among the best in the world by the QS World University Rankings by Subject

Milan, 10 April 2024 – In an increasingly competitive global academic environment, Politecnico di Milano has once again established itself as one of the leading academic institutions worldwide, ranking among the top universities in its core subjects: 7th place for both Design and Architecture and 23rd place for Engineering, according to data published today by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.

The results released today, with a significant presence in the world rankings in multiple fields of study, consolidate the university's reputation as a leader in education and scientific and technological research.

"What emerges from the latest QS survey is the value of engineering subjects, which in today's increasingly complex and multidisciplinary scenario must be defined using the plural. In this specific field, we are among the top 25 universities for Data Science & AI, facing close competition,” stated Professor Donatella Sciuto, Rector of the Politecnico di Milano. “Equally important is the confirmation of the university's undisputed excellence in Architecture and Design.”

Examining the rankings in greater detail, the Politecnico di Milano has achieved outstanding results in various subject areas, with prominent positions in key sectors of economic and scientific development, such as Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering, ranking 9th in the world in these subjects, which are critical for the technological development and innovation that guide industrial progress.

In the field of Civil Engineering, the university ranks 12th in the world. Despite increasing demand from the job market, the number of graduates, not only from the Politecnico, in this field is decreasing. This shortage represents an extraordinary employment opportunity for those who choose to pursue a path that places professionals at the forefront of Italy infrastructural development, with employment rates for Politecnico graduates reaching 97% within one year of graduation.

Furthermore, the university has been ranked 23rd in the crucial field of Data Science & AI, an indicator evaluated by QS for the first time, further confirming the efforts of researchers and professors. Precisely in this area, for those who choose to be at the forefront of the digital transition, with the opportunity to contribute to the development of new techniques, applications, and ethical implications, the Politecnico di Milano offers over 50 years experience in the study of artificial intelligence. Indeed, our university has established itself as a major centre for AI research, with a transversal and pervasive approach covering all areas of research and innovation.

Compared to last year, the Politecnico di Milano has made significant progress in various subject areas, including Physics and Astronomy (+22 places), Architecture and Built Environment (+3), Mathematics (+3), and Chemical Engineering (+7), thus demonstrating a continued commitment to academic excellence and pioneering research.

All 12 university departments are also in the TOP50 for at least one subject.

In Italy Politecnico di Milano reaffirms its position as primary benchmark in Architecture, Design and Engineering.

Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers.

The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.

Research has always been linked to didactics and it is a priority commitment which has allowed Politecnico Milano to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world. Research constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system.

Knowing the world in which you are going to work is a vital requirement for training students. By referring back to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated in following new paths and dealing with the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases favored by Fondazione Politecnico and by consortiums to which Politecnico belong, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.

The challenge which is being met today projects this tradition which is strongly rooted in the territory beyond the borders of the country, in a relationship which is developing first of all at the European level with the objective of contributing to the creation of a single professional training market. Politecnico takes part in several research, sites and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico's contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees Politecnico Milano taking part into the European and world network of leading technical universities and it offers several courses beside many which are entirely taught in English.
