20 Suction bucket jackets successfully installed at Borkum Riffgrund 2
Suction Bucket Jackets are installed at Ørsted's Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore windfarm in Germany. NGI and FRAMO were engaged by Ørsted for the installation the installation. The engagement also included design and installation of comprehensive Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems on two of the jackets to monitor and verify behaviour of the structures during operation in the field.
A milestone in offshore wind
On behalf of Ørsted, the first of 20 offshore wind turbine foundations using suction bucket technology (SBJ) has successfully been installed in the German sector of the North Sea. “We are happy to finally see the first installation in place. Now we want to make sure that the installation phase is executed in the best possible way,” said Peter Buhl, SBJ foundation project manager at Ørsted.
Taking care of the oceans
The contamination of the sea is one of our greatest environmental challenges. NGI contributes to cleaner seas, and participates in research programmes and international initiatives that aim to prevent pollution and give cleaner seas. Online measurement and monitoring of hydrocarbons in water, and research on how microplastics are spreading and affecting the seas of the world, are two examples.

Toxins in Tyrifjorden - where do they come from?
In 2014 and 2015 the Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA) found that PFOS levels in fish from lake Tyrifjorden were respectively 20 and 45 times higher on average than in fish from the lakes Mjøsa and Randsfjorden. The NEA has therefore initiated a project to detect the emission sources.

NGI in collaboration with FRAMO contracted to install wind turbine foundations for DONG Energy
NGI (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute) and DONG Energy Wind Power recently signed a contract for installation of 20 offshore wind turbine bucket foundations, called Suction Bucket Jackets. The turbines will be placed at the offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 2 in the German sector of the North Sea. Subcontractor to NGI will be the Norwegian firm FRAMO.
New Directors reflect NGI´s international strategy
Three new members have been elected to the Board of Directors of NGI, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. For the first time, a non-Norwegian citizen enters the board. Mariner jacket safely transferred to barge
The jacket structure for the platform at Statoil's Mariner-field in the UK sector of the North Sea was safely transferred to the towing barge at the yard in Cadiz at the southern coast of Spain on the 25th of July. The operation is documented on a timelapse video. NGI was in the project from the start, performing geotechnical FEED for the pile and mudmat design.
Sri Lankan drinking water heavily contaminated, concludes NGI
For many inhabitants in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, the quest for clean water has made every day life difficult. The water in the area’s open wells has been polluted and foul looking. Locals and environmentalists have complained to the authorities, leading to various investigations and the closure of a power station accused of causing oil leaks. However, there was no oil in the wells, concludes NGI.
