VARTA® batteries for Start-Stop technology flourishing: company expands production capacity in Europe
€275 million for enlarged manufacturing capacity to make replacement batteries in original equipment quality – because not all AGM batteries are the same
VARTA batteries set new standards when it comes to applications involving eco-friendly Start-Stop technology and the brand is already the market leader in supplying Start-Stop batteries as original equipment. These high-tech products, which are sold as VARTA Start-Stop and VARTA Start-Stop Plus on the replacement parts market, have managed to secure a large market share thanks to their exceptional quality. And the market will grow further – which is why the company is now investing around €275 million in additional capacity in Germany, the lion’s share of which has been set aside for boosting the production of Start-Stop batteries.
“The battery is gaining a far more significant role in terms of the new Start-Stop technology as it constitutes the heart of the entire system,” says Jean-François Bouveyron, Vice President of Independent Aftermarket Sales at Johnson Controls Power Solutions EMEA. “Which is all the more reason to take a close look at the batteries, because, despite similar-sounding descriptions, there are vast differences in the performance of the AGM models on the market. Customers who put their trust in the VARTA brand can be sure of receiving a battery that fully corresponds with original equipment specifications and that benefits from continuous development.”
The company’s range boasts five specially developed models for each of the two types of Start-Stop technology, as conventional starter batteries would not be able to withstand the high demands for very long. The basic model is the VARTA Start-Stop which is based on EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) technology and has been developed for vehicles with simple Start-Stop technology.
For more demanding requirements there’s the VARTA Start-Stop Plus with AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology. This boasts even higher cyclic stability and charge acceptance – a key factor for an advanced Start-Stop system.
The leading quality of VARTA batteries has also been confirmed by independent sources: the VARTA Start-Stop was honoured with a bronze Edison Award by the jury of this American technology competition, and the VARTA Start-Stop Plus received the Volkswagen Group Award for both exceptional performance and outstanding heat resistance – the first time a battery has received an award from a vehicle manufacturer.
The rapidly increasing acceptance of Start-Stop technology on the part of consumers is resulting in rapid market growth: according to Johnson Controls forecasts, 35 million Start-Stop batteries a year could be produced in Europe by the end of 2015. By 2015, around 70% of cars produced across Europe could feature Start-Stop technology.
