Martin Andersen Appointed New General Manager at Renowned Design Hotel THE THIEF
Nordic Hotels & Resorts welcomes Martin Andersen as new General Manager of THE THIEF, one of Europe’s most distinctive design hotels. Known for its bold approach and impeccable service, THE THIEF is a cultural landmark on Tjuvholmen in Oslo. With a career spanning New York’s luxury scene and Norway’s most talked-about boutique hotels, Martin brings both a cosmopolitan outlook and local insights.
Bold, artful, and unmistakably glamorous. Norway’s foremost design hotel THE THIEF has been a cultural hotspot since opening on Tjuvholmen in 2013. Now, Nordic Hotels & Resorts welcomes Martin Andersen as new General Manager for the hotel. With experience from top-tier luxury hotels and celebrated boutique hotels, he brings a uniquely cosmopolitan perspective.
– Martin is someone who leads by example. A visionary with an entrepreneurial mindset, he brings unmatched experience from the world of concept-driven luxury. Together with his ability to create motivated teams, I am certain he is the right person to lead such an iconic landmark like THE THIEF. I am very happy to welcome him back to the Nordic Hotels & Resorts family, says Henrik Berghult, Chief Operating Officer at Nordic Hotels & Resorts’ Luxury & Lifestyle Division.
When it comes to luxury hospitality, Martin’s experience spans almost two decades. It includes roles such as Food & Beverage Manager at The Lowell Hotel and The Plaza Hotel, both in New York, as well as several Director roles at the Waldorf Astoria New York. After working as Director of Sales at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, he moved back to Norway in 2018 to take on the role as Commercial Director for Amerikalinjen, being a key member of the pre-opening team. He has previously worked as Director of Sales at THE THIEF, and comes most recently from a position as General Manager at Saga Hotel in Oslo.
Since opening, THE THIEF has redefined the European luxury hotel scene. With its art-driven concept and waterfront location, it came as no surprise when the hotel was named the number one hotel in Northern Europe and fourth best hotel worldwide at the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2024. However, as Martin puts it, the Oslo hotel market is rapidly growing, with new independent brands upping the game. Under his leadership, THE THIEF’s focus will be on fine-tuning its conceptual foundation and making the brand story more felt in the guest journey.
– THE THIEF truly is one of a kind. For many years it has held a unique position, and my goal is to continue building that characteristic THE THIEF experience that keeps guests coming back for more. I’m thrilled to be joining the team and continue its legacy of world-class hospitality. To also be back in Nordic Hotels & Resorts—the most innovative and forward-looking group in our industry—feels like coming home. I can’t wait to once again be working with some of the best people in the Nordic hotel world, says Martin Andersen.
Martin Andersen begins his new role on February 1, 2025.
