Nuet Aquavit Goes Global With Master of Malt and Whisky Exchange
Scandinavian Moments For All
The innovative Norwegian startup Nuet just got one step closer to fulfilling its mission of bringing Scandinavian moments to people all around the world, as they have teamed up with the award-winning online retailers Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt.
Founder Morten Pharo Halle comments: "We are delighted to finally be able to offer our truly unique product to discerning spirits fans all around the world. We are a small company who still does everything by hand, so a lot of love and hard work goes into each bottle. Everything from washing, filling, labelling and packing is done by a group of friends and colleagues who volunteer, so we're incredibly proud of the fact that we can now share the end product with virtually everyone."
A Modern Take on Almost 500 Years of Tradition
The company's Nuet Dry Aquavit is known as the world's first aquavit that serves as a proper substitute for premium gin. It was born out of a desire to make the most out of the huge potential they saw in this quintessentially Scandinavian spirit, as it had been a well-kept Scandinavian secret since its first mention in 1531.
Product developer Benjamin Lee comments: "In 2017 we observed with interest how the gin market became more and more saturated, and how local spirits grew in popularity around the world. So we thought it was a real shame that something like aquavit, which is so dear to us Scandis, remained a Scandinavian novelty, enjoyed only here, and only during celebrations like Christmas and midsommar. It was obvious to us that the potential that aquavit as a spirit had was huge, but it remained untapped due to a variety of reasons. It needed an update, so that's exactly what we gave it."
Whatever Gin Does, Nuet Does it Better
In mid-2019, after more than 100 rounds of test distilling, the Nuet Dry Aquavit was finally ready; an aquavit unlike any the world had seen before. Notes of grapefruit and blackcurrant made it fresher, smoother, and far more palatable than its ancestors, whilst still honouring its roots, with clear influences of the traditional caraway.
Lee comments: "When developing the Nuet Dry Aquavit, the litmus test for us was that it needed to work superbly with top quality tonic water, as well as in a dry martini. These are honest drinks with nowhere to hide, and where other aquavits tend to fail. The end result was a product that takes any usually gin-based drink, and adds a whole other level to it; a world's first. Being a bartender and bar owner by trade, and having myself developed the product, I am of course highly biased in my assessment of the product. But the feedback from fellow bartenders around the world is close to unanimous; they love it, and I see why."
