MUNCH and TCS Advance AI-Enabled Art Experience, Bringing Munch’s Drawing Archive to Life in Landmark Exhibition
With the new technological advancements, visitors’ drawings can now be matched with Edvard Munch’s sketches with greater precision, accessing even more of his pieces and improving overall experience.
OSLO | MUMBAI, February 24, 2026: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading global IT services, consulting, and business solutions company, has upgraded the first-of-its-kind AI-led innovation that allows MUNCH museum visitors to explore the digital archives of Edvard Munch’s 7,050 drawings. The solution which enables visitors to create their own sketches has been improved with the inclusion of new AI models and technical enhancements.
In 2024, MUNCH and TCS, developed an interactive drawing experience using visual language models for image matching. The experience enables visitors to compare their own sketches with related works from Munch’s collection of drawings, creating a playful and creative way for audiences to engage with and explore his art.
Now, TCS has used a larger vision language model (VLM) to sharpen relevance, and a refined sampling algorithm to broaden diversity across texture, color, and shading (heavy/medium/light). This has allowed visitors’ sketches to be matched to Munch’s sketch collection with greater precision, and to further refine their search by specifying the color and drawing tool used. Following the new updates, museum visitors have created over 21,000 drawings over four weeks. Additionally, Motif information about MUNCH’s sketches have been incorporated into the platform. This lets user sketches to be matched to Munch’s sketches according to the motifs.
Tone Hansen, Director at MUNCH, said “The project is the result of a unique long-term research collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services, evolving from an experimental prototype into a large-scale experiential exhibition opening at MUNCH in June 2026. Presented alongside Munch’s original works in the 10th-floor galleries at our new museum in Oslo, the exhibition will invite visitors to draw their way into the archive. We expect more than 500,000 drawings to be created by the audience, where the act of drawing opens new ways of experiencing Munch’s work.”
The TCS and MUNCH research and innovation collaboration that has explored how human creativity and technology can inspire new ways of engaging with art will be demonstrated at a major exhibition opening at MUNCH in June 2026. The exhibition will place drawings of both Edvard Munch and the museum visitors on display side-by-side.
