The Next Generation of Head and Eye Tracking: Tobii's Eye Tracker 5

As the world leader in eye-tracking technology, Tobii creates the conditions for new insights into human behavior and intuitive user interfaces. For their next-generation eye tracker, Tobii teamed up with Above to build a smarter, lighter, and more durable device to house their state of the art technology. Engineered for PC gaming, the new Eye Tracker 5 remains to be the only device capable of tracking both head and eye movements. Above is thrilled to be part of Tobii’s journey, helping them design & engineer a cutting edge gaming peripheral.

As the undisputed leader in the market for eye-tracking technology, Tobii continues to push the limits of what can be achieved with their devices and technology. Having collected copious amounts of information and learnings from their previous generation eye trackers, they reached out to us with a very clear brief:

To help them create a new generation eye-tracker with high usability top of mind, be the slimmest of its kind, and engineered to last.

The Above team immersed themselves in understanding how users operate eye trackers, what their needs are, the pain points, and wishes. This helped us isolate key insights into technical limitations and opportunities. In close collaboration with the Tobii team, we ideated various design trajectories forward, which later were prototyped rigorously. This led us through an iterative process of ideation, prototyping, verification, and validation.

The Tobii Eye tracker 5 is engineered for a competitive edge, it features an improved and custom-built infrared optical sensor, built specifically for responsiveness, accuracy, and reliability.

In response to Tobii’s brief and user feedback Above designed and engineered the new eye tracker. The device is an 11.2” (28cm) precisely engineered aluminum body that is much more optimized for high performance than any predecessor. Moreover, the new device boasts a much more premium CMF where high-quality aluminum, a minimalistic design language, and hard edges are key players. A flat mounting surface, better material choice, and a slim magnetic mount make the hold much stronger and more reliable.

The Eye Tracker 5 is a revolutionary new way to play and compete, setting new benchmarks for PC gaming peripherals.

This is what Ron Burke, Chief Editor, of Gaming Trend has to say.
