Al-Sumait Prize for African Development Announces Opening of Nominations in Health Category for 2018

Kuwait City, Kuwait, January 15, 2018 – Kuwait’s Al-Sumait Prize for African Development today called for nominations for its 2018 award in the Health category. Nominations for the prize need to be received by Al-Sumait’s Prize office no later than June 30, 2018.

“Al-Sumait’s 2018 Prize in the Health Category is open to individuals and organizations delivering pioneering contributions to solving Health challenges in Africa,” said Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), which administers the prestigious prize.

Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin said the aim of the 2018 prize is to recognize individuals or institutions who through their research projects or initiatives have made significant advancement within the field of Health that have produced seminal impact and tangible results in health-care systems on the continent, especially for the underprivileged.

Key conditions for the prize include being able to demonstrate research work or projects that are innovative and have achieved high-impact in line with the international standards established for the prize. Dr. Shihab-Eldin said the 2018 Al-Sumait’s Health award will build on the success of the Al-Sumait 2015 Health, 2016 Food Security and recently awarded 2017 Education award in creating a legacy of solid transformation in the lives of countless underprivileged individuals and societies.

“The winning Al-Sumait Prize Laureates of the last three years have demonstrated initiatives of paramount importance in promoting significant economic, social, human resources and infrastructure development in the African continent. We return to Health for 2018 and invite the Health and African Development community to nominate individuals or organizations who are furthering development in Health in Africa,” said Dr. Shihab-Eldin.

Initiated in 2013 by the Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Al-Sumait Prize for African Development is designed to reward innovative and inspiring initiatives and research by individuals and organizations that address the challenges facing the African continent. The award commemorates the legacy of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwait physician who dedicated his life to helping less fortunate individuals and communities in Africa to face the challenges of development in the continent.
