Designed for the middle of everywhere, IC3 by Haglöfs (Outsiders by Nature)

Today, Haglöfs launches the new IC3 collection that pays tribute to their mountain heritage. Designed in close collaboration with outdoor lifestyle and performance design pathfinders Piers Thomas and Nigel Cabourn, the IC3 collection is defined by timeless craftsmanship and contemporary performance materials of the highest quality.

“This collection was very much inspired by our past,” says Paul Cosgrove, Global Product Director at Haglöfs. “But we did not want to deliver a vintage collection. This is a retro-future design. Therefore, we took inspiration from the timeless Haglöfs visual language, super concentrated it, then powered it with the highest performance we could utilize."

Recreating the timeless Haglöfs lifestyle with Piers Thomas and Nigel Cabourn

The mission of the IC3 project was to hand down essential Haglöfs garments through the generations. And fulfilling it involved digging deep into the Haglöfs archives in search of the craftsmanship elements that could be folded into a new visual language. During the search, vintage garments were filtered based on their embodiment of Literal Functionality and Neo Hantverk. These discoveries were then recreated as realizations of the timeless Haglöfs lifestyle.

“What makes this collection so special I feel is that we have been able to take 70 year old ideas but interpret them into a new and contemporary collection,” says Nigel Cabourn.

Playing a big part in fulfilling the mission were designers Piers Thomas and Nigel Cabourn, who co-designed the IC3 collection together with Haglöfs’ design team. Piers Thomas brought 30 years of experience creating iconic products at the leading edge of performance design, while Nigel Cabourn contributed a deep understanding of the outdoor mountain space and its visual influences going back over 50 years.

“To have these two individuals work on this collection with us with all their inputs was extremely valuable for us in our process of understanding where we have come from, where we are now, and where we are going,” says Paul Cosgrove.

In addition to the discoveries made in the Haglöfs archives, another creative influence for the designers was the original 1953 Everest expedition with Sir Edmond Hillary.

One garment from the collection with a clear reaching-the-top-of-Everest vibe is the IC3 Down Parka. A modern take on the original Everest parka, it utilizes modern Haglöfs performance fabric and colors similar to those used on the original expedition.

Meeting performance needs off the mountain

While much inspiration was drawn from the past, IC3 was designed with everyday life in-between mountain expeditions in mind. A particular muse was the popular Swedish mountain town Åre.

Accordingly, the fit and feel of IC3 garments is more lifestyle-oriented compared to other Haglöfs collections. Yet, they are built to be highly functional and meet the weather protection and comfort needs in the mountain towns and valleys. Performance materials of the highest quality are used, including Gore-Tex, Polartec and down.

The IC3 collection is now available for purchase at haglöfs.com and selected Haglöfs stores worldwide.
