University of Gävle’s workshops are now open to alumni

In the pilot project OpenLab, four alumni are invited to use the University’s equipment and skills from workshops in building 45 and in our Digital Learning Lab to develop their ideas.

The University, together with Movexum, selected five alumni from the programmes in Industrial design and Building Engineering, who were invited to use our workshops to continue developing their prototypes and ideas. Each of them has started their own business and now continue their product development, concerning for example, construction, sustainability and material, at the University.

“We would like to gain more knowledge about how the University can create creative test environments to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as find new ways to cooperate with Movexum,” says Anna Bäcklund coordinator in innovation.

A new way of thinking

Movexum functions as an incubator, and all alumni have a business coach to assist them, but they also need a workshop and people who can provide suggestions concerning practical details.

“This is completely new and could be something truly great, but we need to develop regulations and establish a flexible structure,” Anna Bäcklund says.

The University of Gävle has approximately 17 000 students, more than 50 study programmes and second-cycle programmes, about 1 000 courses in humanities, social and natural sciences and technology.

Research Profiles
Built Environment and Health-promoting Working Life are the general research profiles of the higher education institution. Important parts included are Spatial Planning with a specialisation in Sustainable Built Environment and Musculoskeletal Disorders with the purpose to prevent work-related injuries. In 2010, the higher education institution received permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in the profile area of Built Environment.
The higher education institution has applied for permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in technology, humanities and social sciences.
