NGK Wins Order for NAS Batteries to Be Installed for Upscaling Renewable Energy Sector Project of the Ministry of Energy, Mongolia

Adopted for use in NGK’s first joint crediting mechanism (JCM) project by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (hereinafter “NGK”) based in Nagoya, Japan, announced that it has won an order for NAS® batteries for storing electrical energy for the Ministry of Energy of Mongolia. The order was received jointly with JGC Corporation (hereinafter “JGC”), which is headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, and MCS International LLC (hereinafter, “MCS International”), which is headquartered in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The NAS batteries will be used in Mongolia’s first solar power plant construction project with an adjoining battery energy storage system. The introduction of large-capacity NAS batteries alongside the solar power generation facilities will enable solar power-generated electricity to be used day or night. This capability will help to improve Mongolia’s energy security and reduce the amount of its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The solar power plant construction project with an adjoining battery energy storage system will be carried out as part of the Upscaling Renewable Energy Sector Project. This project seeks to expand the introduction of renewable energy in Mongolia, where air pollution has become a serious problem due to the country’s reliance on coal-fired power generation for its electricity supply. The project will be funded by the Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), in addition to a loan from the ADB, as the project has adopted advanced low carbon technologies. The Japan Fund for the JCM was established at the ADB by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan.

NGK believes that the order for this project was won as a result of strong evaluations of NAS batteries’ ability to offer a large capacity and long discharge time, along with NGK’s extensive delivery and long-term operational track records; JGC’s solar power plant design and construction track record and energy management proposal capabilities; and MCS International’s construction track record. Going forward, NGK will continue to promote growth in orders for storage battery projects with adjoining renewable energy facilities in connection with the energy policies of various countries. In the process, NGK will realize a stable supply of renewable energy and contribute to measures to address climate change and the formation of a decarbonized society.

NAS batteries have a large capacity and can discharge for a long time, so they can be used in a wide range of applications. Notably, they are used to level out electric power loads, adjust supply/demand balances, stabilize renewable energy sources and as emergency backup power sources. NAS batteries have made a significant contribution to reducing the impact on the environment by, for example, conserving resources and energy. To date, NGK has installed NAS batteries in over 200 locations worldwide, with a total output of over 600,000 kilowatts (600 megawatts) and a total storage capacity of over 4.2 million kilowatt-hours (4,200 megawatt-hours).
