Union Investment commissions Züblin to expand “RiemArcaden” in Munich

  • New construction to offer approx. 20,400 m² of rental space for mixed hotel and retail use
  • Contract value of approx. € 46 million

"StadtQuartier RiemArcaden” is growing. Union Investment, which holds the property in its “UniImmo: Deutschland” open real estate fund, has commissioned Ed. Züblin AG, a subsidiary of construction and technology group STRABAG SE, to expand the mixed-use neighbourhood in eastern Munich. The value of the new contract amounts to about € 46 million.

The works comprise the turnkey construction of a building with about 20,400 m² of hotel and retail space as well as the retrofit of parts of an existing underground car park. Construction is to start in the spring of 2016 and should be completed by the summer of 2018.

The building, designed by the architectural firm of “Allmann Sattler Wappner”, will offer retail and hotel space on four floors. The upper two floors have already been let to Motel One. The successful budget design brand will operate a 311-room hotel with a total area of about 9,400 m². The lower two floors offer about 11,000 m² of retail space. Anchor tenants are the discount supermarket Aldi and fashion retailer Wöhrl. The new building will be linked to the “StadtQuartier” via a so-called portico – an element that, similar to an arched gate, forms the front of the building. The portico will be executed as an approx. 22 m high and 150 m long steel roof structure.

The new construction is aiming at Gold Certification under LEED Core & Shell. The building not only represents a significant expansion of the “StadtQuartier” in Munich “Messestadt” that opened in 2004, but also is the architectural completion of the ensemble of shopping centre, offices, residences and hotels. Ed. Züblin AG and other STRABAG subsidiaries have constructed several office, hotel and retail buildings in “StadtQuartier RiemArcaden”.
