ZÜBLIN and STRABAG celebrate inauguration of new corporate office in Karlsruhe

  • Extension building creates space for growth
  • ZÜBLIN and STRABAG entities under one roof
  • Karlsruhe Mayor Frank Mentrup highlights importance of construction group for the city

After around 1½ years of construction, the extension to the head office of ZÜBLIN Subdivision Karlsruhe, “An der Tagweide 18”, was officially opened on 8 October 2021. The three-storey timber hybrid extension complements the existing building and offers space for over 100 office workplaces, modern open spaces and office pods, a large lounge, and facilities for workplace health management.

The inauguration ceremony, held in full compliance with the valid Covid-19 safety measures, was attended by around 250 employees as well as by Frank Mentrup, Mayor of the City of Karlsruhe, and Stephan von der Heyde, member of the ZÜBLIN Management Board.

Clear commitment by STRABAG and ZÜBLIN to Karlsruhe
In his welcome address, Mayor Mentrup highlighted the importance of the construction group for Karlsruhe, not only as an attractive employer, but also for its active role in shaping the city, for example with the construction of the Kriegsstraßen Tunnel. “I am particularly pleased that you are creating and securing workplaces in Karlsruhe and that you are making such a clear commitment to our city as Germany’s number one in building construction and civil engineering and as a globally active company,” said the city’s leader.

ZÜBLIN Subdivision Karlsruhe built the extension together with ZÜBLIN Timber, ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering and STRABAG Business Unit Freudenstadt. The planning was performed by the group’s own Zentrale Technik, with operation of the building in the hands of STRABAG Property and Facility Services.

“The collaboration of various corporate entities on the expansion of the Karlsruhe premises shows us once again that teamwork is part of our daily philosophy and practice. I am pleased to be here today, and on behalf of the ZÜBLIN Management Board, I would like to thank all those involved in the construction for their excellent work,” said Stephan von der Heyde.

Climate-friendly construction with wood
The extension was constructed as a timber hybrid building with a prefabricated, load-bearing timber exterior wall and plaster façade. Inside, the mix of wood and plaster creates a modern atmosphere. The timber elements, delivered by ZÜBLIN Timber, consist of around 110 m³ of wood. The extension building thus stores some 110 t of CO2 removed from the atmosphere by the trees during their lifespan.

The heat pump and near-surface concrete core temperature control provide even more climate protection, allowing the new building to be cooled and heated sustainably and energy-efficiently.

Almost all the Karlsruhe entities of the STRABAG Group are now housed at the corporate premises, specifically the teams from ZÜBLIN Subdivision Karlsruhe, STRABAG GmbH (Karlsruhe Group), Zentrale Technik and STRABAG Property and Facility Services.
