Major transformation and infrastructure projects underway in Luleå

Luleå builds sustainably for the future. A very important part of this involves creating increased opportunities for everyone to contribute to social development. Luleå reached its goal of being an equal municipality in 2021, which was an important step towards sustainability as well.

An important part of becoming an equal municipality is to develop housing for all. Luleå has had a great demand for housing for many years. Luleå is today one of two municipalities in Norrbotten that has a continuous and positive population development, but the growth is predicted to increase even more in the entire Norrbotten region in the future.

“It is gratifying that we have so many ongoing housing projects in Luleå. There is continued great interest among private property owners to invest in our city, and in the public sector there are also a lot of exciting things underway that will benefit our local property and housing” market even further”, says Carina Sammeli, Chairman of the municipal board in Luleå.

At the core of Luleå’s development

The biggest community transformation project is the development of the new Kronan district. The area is close to the city center and will eventually become one of the largest districts in Luleå. There is a big focus on building sustainably in the area, which can become home to up to 7000 people.

The municipality has also drawn up a new overview plan for the central parts. The goal is for Luleå city center to become even more attractive for residents, visitors and business establishments. The new plan sets the right conditions for starting new construction projects right at the core of Luleå’s development.

A project with very high demands on sustainability

Another major development for Luleå is the ongoing infrastructure project Malmporten. As Sweden’s largest bulk port, Luleå must increase its capacity, accessibility and, not least, safety in connection with the country’s now largest project in infrastructure.

The purpose of the Malmporten project, which is financed by the state and the port of Luleå, is to widen and deepen the waterways into the harbour and create greater depth, as well as two to three new berths. In connection with a new and deeper harbour, a railway will also be built to connect it to Södra Malmbanan.

Malmporten is a project with very high demands on sustainability. Enormously large masses must be dredged and used to fill new harbour areas. All in all, the new port ground will be the size of 75 football pitches.

As a result of the Malmporten development project, the Gulf of Bothnia is opened up to larger ships, and the port of Luleå becomes an even more important hub for Swedish imports and exports.
