Stena initiates extensive improvement work

The cooperation between the various companies within Stena has intensified in recent times. In particular between Stena Line, Stena Roro and Stena Teknik, as they work together to implement new fuel-saving technologies. A new digital measuring tool for fuel consumption has been developed and will be gradually installed in all ships.

It may sound simple – a system that measures fuel consumption is to be installed in some ships. It is not a big deal, is it? That is exactly what it is. Within Stena’s various companies there are altogether more than one hundred ships and each one is unique. In other words, the system must be adapted specifically to each ship – and that is a big deal.

“It is really all about us reaching high sustainability goals within the entire group. Therefore, sustainability work permeates everything we undertake now, within Stena Roro and within Stena’s other companies. All new development, all new technology and all investments made are based on us taking a step closer to realising Stena’s sustainability vision”, says Per Westling, CEO of Stena Roro AB.

New for 2023 – emissions must be reported

Working for sustainability is not new within the Stena Group. Stena has been setting standards when it comes to the development and implementation of new technology since the company was founded. What is new is that working towards higher energy efficiency is at the top of the agenda.

“New for 2023 is that, in accordance with new EU regulations, we must report our emissions measured in CO2 and that each ship will be graded accordingly. The system is similar to that of electronic and domestic devices, with a scale grading from A to E. As each vessel is unique, it requires us to evaluate each vessel and develop customised solutions for each one. This is a gigantic task initiated in 2022, which will continue throughout 2023 and onwards. Each ship gets its own strategy for saving and optimisation”, explains Per Westling.

He also emphasises that the work is much more extensive than one might think. Per Westling summarises the upcoming work:

“Improvement measures include everything from the installation of new technology for more efficient operation that leads to reduced fuel consumption, to the rescheduling and planning of entire routes to ensure optimal operation for each individual vessel. The planning work, the mapping and eventually all the efforts to be made to optimise all ships is one of the most extensive tasks we have ever conducted within Stena. It is now, in 2023, that we are laying the foundations for how all our ships will be classified in the future and thereby enabling us to reach our overarching goals for decarbonisation.
