Airon’s AI Factories in Use as OpenAI Launches Open Models

As OpenAI launches its first open language models, Swedish company Airon is one of the few players worldwide providing the infrastructure where the models have been tested and run. Based in Sweden, Airon delivers the technical capacity required–putting the country on the map in global AI development.

"The launch of open models by OpenAI is a milestone for the entire industry. At the same time, infrastructure and computing power are crucial to achieving real impact. Our role is to ensure the models can actually be used in practice and make a difference. We’re proud to deliver a solution at an international level–right here from Sweden," says Robert Lidberg, CEO of Airon.

Since summer 2025, AI Sweden has been running the gpt-oss models in Airon’s AI factories, which are equipped with the latest technology from NVIDIA.

Sovereign AI Infrastructure
Growing demands for data protection, transparency, and legal control are driving the need for local AI infrastructure. Airon’s platform is Swedish-owned, not subject to U.S. jurisdiction, and built to comply with AI regulations in Europe. The goal is to provide countries, organizations, and companies with the ability to use and train AI models with full control over their data.

"Having open and free models is not enough–the infrastructure must be open as well. Our AI factories are an essential part of the infrastructure needed to support open models in a European context. With this in mind, we are setting a standard for what technical sovereignty really means," says Robert Lidberg, CEO of Airon.

The fact that OpenAI’s models are now being tested in Sweden stems from the Svea Project, AI Sweden’s initiative to develop a digital assistant for the public sector. Airon joined early as a sponsor and has provided the infrastructure that made testing possible in 55 public organizations, including twenty percent of Sweden’s municipalities.

"The Svea Project shows that the public sector can not only use AI–but also develop it on its own terms. Airon’s concept is ideal for public organizations, and their capacity has enabled us to train and test models locally. This is a critical investment in Swedish innovation and the future of the public sector. We look forward to continuing this work together," says Jonatan Permert, AI Transformation Strategist at AI Sweden and Project Manager of the Svea Project.
