Laureate of the 2021 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award to be announced

Welcome to cover the announcement of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), live from Stockholm. The award amounts to 5 million SEK (approx. 440 000 EUR) making it the largest international children’s and young adult literature award in the world. 262 candidates from 68 countries are nominated. 

When:  Tuesday, March 30, 13:00 CET
Venue: TioTretton children’s library, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Stockholm

The announcement will be broadcast live on alma.se/en. Swedish Minister for Culture and Democracy Amanda Lind will perform an official greeting. The ALMA Jury Chair Boel Westin will announce the laureate(s) of 2021 and read the jury's motivation. This is followed by a presentation of the laureate by jury member Mårten Sandén. The event will be hosted by the Swedish cultural columnist Stefan Ingvarsson. Due to the spread of COVID-19, it will take place without an audience.

Media outlets who wish to cover the news on site are asked to pre-register and be on site in good time to prepare equipment and take a place at a safe distance. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish Government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature. With a prize of five million Swedish kronor, it highlights the importance of reading, today and for future generations. ​In 2021, 263 candidates are in the running for the world’s largest children’s literature award (worth SEK 5m, USD 513k). The ALMA list is one of the most comprehensive lists of the world's foremost living children's book creators and reading promoters. Among the 263 names on the list is next year's laureate whose identity will be announced on the 13th of April 2021.
