Blåkläder invests in sustainable textile dyeing

Workwear company Blåkläder has acquired a minority stake in Imogo, a Swedish company specializing in resource-efficient textile dyeing. Imogo’s technology reduces the use of water, energy and chemicals in garment production.

“Since most of the environmental impact from clothing occurs during manufacturing, it’s vital to develop methods that reduce resource consumption. Imogo’s groundbreaking technology addresses several of the industry’s toughest sustainability challenges, and we naturally want to support that,” says Anders Carlsson, MD of Blåkläder.

As of April 2025, Blåkläder owns close to 10 percent of Imogo AB, a Swedish company developing advanced solutions to reduce resource use in textile dyeing. Imogo’s technology can be applied by any textile company seeking to transition to more sustainable production methods. Blåkläder’s investment aims to accelerate the shift towards a more sustainable textile industry and reduce the sector’s environmental and climate impact.

“Traditional textile dyeing requires large amounts of resources, and our goal is to make that part of the value chain more sustainable. The partnership with Blåkläder provides not only capital but also valuable industry experience that will help us grow,” says Joacim Wellander, CEO of Imogo.

With Imogo’s technology, dye is sprayed onto the fabric and fixed at room temperature, reducing the need for water, energy and chemicals by more than 90 percent compared to today’s leading technique, jet dyeing. Thanks to recirculation, the technology can also cut wastewater volumes by up to 99 percent.

Blåkläder hopes the investment will make it easier for material suppliers to choose a more sustainable alternative to conventional textile dyeing.

“Ninety percent of all the fabric we use comes from only ten carefully selected textile producers, and this has been the case for many years. By building long-term, trust-based relationships with our suppliers, we are well placed to influence sustainability efforts throughout the value chain,” says Anders Carlsson.

Blåkläder already uses textiles dyed with a method called Dope Dye, which reduces resource use in the dyeing of synthetic materials such as polyester. Imogo’s technology can also be used for natural fibres such as cotton, linen and viscose.
