Reborn classics – two new Canon RF lenses: 50mm F1.8 STM and 70-200mm F4L IS USM
Canon Europe today announces that two of its most popular lenses are now available in RF versions. Canon is dedicated to the RF technology and has announced 7 RF lenses this year alone. With these two new lenses, Canon has launched a total of 17 RF lenses since the RF lens series was announced in 2018. The RF mount is designed to provide ultra-fast communication between lens and camera body. This fast communication technology enables cameras like the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 to perform thousands of autofocus and image stabilization adjustments in a second leading to best in class image performance. This is important for all RF lenses and especially so for the two newest additions to the RF lens line-up: RF 50mm F1.8 STM and RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM. Using the lenses with Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera bodies in the revolutionary EOS R System, photographers and videographers have greater levels of performance and creative flexibility.
Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
The EF version of this lens is much beloved by photographers and videographers. This is because of the useful angle of view and ability to easily blur the background. The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM lens is one of the bestselling Canon lenses thanks to these qualifications. The RF version inherits all these qualities and adds new. The minimum focus distance is now 0.3 meters improving the possibility for ultra close-ups. The RF control ring can be switched between focus and exposure. The autofocus STM (Stepping Motor) system has been accelerated thanks to the speedy communications made possible by the RF mount. This also enables up to seven stops stabilization on EOS R5 and EOS R6 camera bodies, making handheld low light shooting easy, as RF lenses can take full advantage of the sensor stabilization (IBIS) in these cameras. All this makes this lens a compelling choice for all photographers and video shooters.
One of the first photographers to test the new ‘nifty fifty’ in the RF version was Canon Nordic Filmmaker Margarita Sheremet, and she was amazed by it. “This small, almost no-weight, little RF 50mm really surprised me. It’s quick and light, and as I’m always on the move it worked perfectly with my fast pace in my environment.”

Canon RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM
A classic zoom range favoured by all professional photographers. However, the lenses covering this zoom range are often big and heavy. Not with this lens. It is smaller and lighter than the Canon RF 24-70mm, as the RF 70-200mm only weights 695g and has a minimum length of 11.9 cm when stored. All thanks to Canon’s RF technology.
The lens is well suited for handheld use when capturing stills and video, because of the 7.5 stops stabilization when used with a Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 body. The dual nano USM (UltraSonicMotor) provides super-fast focusing no matter the light level especially when paired with the latest generation of DIGIC processors in the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras.
The minimum focus distance is 0.6 meter thanks to the advanced optical technology used in this lens. The front lens element has a special fluorite coating giving excellent contrast and providing a high level of scratch resistance. This makes the RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM an excellent choice for field work.
