Claes Kollberg and Paul Sandberg of CemVision named as Breakthrough Energy Fellows

CemVision today announced that co-founder and CTO Claes Kollberg and Paul Sandberg, PhD Building Materials have been named to the second cohort of Breakthrough Energy Fellows.

(Nybro, Sweden) Today, Breakthrough Energy, a climate organization founded by Bill Gates, announced the second cohort of its Fellows program as part of the organization’s mission to support the development of a range of clean energy technologies the world needs to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As part of the second cohort of Fellows, CemVision’s Paul Sandberg and Claes Kollberg will receive multifaceted support to help accelerate their climate positive cement technology. CemVision’s technology aims to reinvent cement by replacing fossil limestone with upcycled industrial byproducts and switching fuels such as plastic and coal for green thermal energy.

The Breakthrough Energy Fellows program identifies the scientists, engineers, business experts, and teams behind groundbreaking climate innovations from around the world and provides them with funding, mentorship, education, and access to the Breakthrough Energy network with the aim of accelerating these new technologies’ path from early development to widespread deployment.

Mr. Sandberg and Mr. Kollberg are now starting research, and later demo production, of their low-carbon cement technology in a lab-scale cement factory.

BE Fellows focuses its support on innovations across Breakthrough Energy’s Five Grand Challenges. The second cohort of Fellows consists of innovators working in carbon capture, storage, and sequestration, cement, electrofuels, food and agriculture, hydrogen, long duration storage, and steel. The program also includes projects in biofuels, water treatment, HVAC systems, light weighting, and renewables. The projects were selected through a competitive application process and must demonstrate and model an ability to reduce 500 million tons of carbon dioxide per year at scale.
