CFHILL Opens 3 New Exhibitions — Kennedy Yanko, Ten By Ten & Lena Svedberg

Kennedy Yanko
Moving Weight
April 29 — May 22, 2022

Kennedy Yanko will present her first ever solo exhibition in Scandinavia at CFHILL in Stockholm. She will present four entirely new sculptures, created for this occasion.

Kennedy Yanko (1988, born in St Louis, MO) is a sculptor and installation artist based in Brooklyn, NY. While she started her artistic career as a painter, she has made her mark on the art world with her sculptures. Her works today are a hybrid of both disciplines, made up equally of salvaged metal and expanses of dried latex paint that have solidified into self-supporting forms — surfaces Yanko calls “paint skins”.

"We are very proud to give Kennedy Yanko her first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. Since the beginning, CFHILL has strived to showcase and support both the best of Swedish art and the strongest voices on the international art scene. Yanko is one of the brightest shining stars in sculpture today with her unique approach to material and a new perspective on what abstract art can be."
— Michael Storåkers, Executive Chairman and Head of Contemporary Art

Yanko’s sculptures are created around contrasts: hard and soft, rough and smooth, polished and matte. Her treatment of material is also in itself full of contradictions. Metal is welded, bent and flattened in a painterly way while paint is sculpted and hardened. From the heavy machinery of the scrap yard to the draping of the paint skins, Yanko creates gravity-defying abstract compositions that are suspended from the ceiling, hung from the wall or free-standing.

Since debuting her sculptures as part of the group show Hidden in Plain Sight at the Jenkins Johnson Project Space in Brooklyn (2017), Yanko has exhibited domestically and internationally. In 2019, Yanko debuted three solo shows at Denny Dimin Gallery in New York, Kavi Gupta in Chicago, and UICA in Grand Rapids, and installed her first public sculpture on the Poydras Corridor in New Orleans in collaboration with The Helis Foundation and the Ogden Museum of Art. In 2020, Yanko debuted two solo shows at Galleria Poggiali in Milan and at Vielmetter Gallery in Los Angeles. She was also named Art Forum’s “Critic’s Pick” in 2019, received a Colene Brown Art Prize awarded by BRIC Arts Media, and was featured in 100 Sculptors of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson. Her institutional exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the University of South Florida. Her work is included in several private museums, The Bunker Artspace, Espacio Tacuari, and the Rubell Museum.

Kennedy Yanko will be on view at CFHILL in the Main Gallery from April 29 to May 22, 2022.

    Ten by Ten

CFHILL's recurrent exhibition Ten by Ten aims to offer a diverse selection of iconic artworks, from different times and places, highlighting the great leaps in art history. This spring we proudly present ten pieces that each illustrate important aspects of the rapid artistic development during the extraordinary 20th century. Pieces strong enough to stand alone and yet here they are, placed in dialogue with one another in our gallery.

Ten by Ten will be on view at CFHILL from April 29 to May 20, 2022.

    Lena Svedberg

Also on display: a collection of nineteen works by legendary artist Lena Svedberg(1946 - 1972). A rare occurrence on the market, these works come with a provenance directly from the artist's family. Drawing her way through life became Lena Svedberg’s adopted lifestyle. Her work always addressed evil, and it was as though she found herself unwillingly drawn to the subject, repeatedly putting her incredibly forceful expressiveness and sheer rage to work in disarming it. At the same time, evil seemed to be eating its way into her body.

Lena Svedberg will be on view at CFHILL from April 29 to May 20, 2022.
