Pressmeddelande —

English version:

Chalmers spinout develops electric motor that could cut material use by 50%

Eliro Technology is developing a new type of electric motor that could reduce the use of copper and rare earth materials by up to 50%. The technology could also enable smaller, lighter motors, with the potential to lower production costs and make electrification more resource efficient, initially targeting the marine industry.

The electrification of transport is accelerating, but electric motor technology has not advanced at the same pace. Many of today’s solutions are still based on motor designs that are more than a century old.

“While electrification is now moving at tremendous speed, many of today’s drivetrains still rely on motor technology that is fundamentally 150 years old. This results in large and heavy motors and gearboxes that require more material, create energy losses and are difficult to design around. It’s time to rethink the motor,” says Cajsa Jonsson, CEO of Eliro.

Eliro’s solution combines characteristics of two established motor topologies, radial flux and axial flux motors. The aim is to maintain high performance while reducing material use, weight and production costs.

“The market has long been asking for smaller and lighter motors, but until now, the alternatives have meant higher costs and more complex designs. We can maintain high performance while reducing both the motor’s footprint and production cost,” continues Cajsa Jonsson.

So far, interest has been particularly strong from the marine industry, where weight and space are critical factors.

“Space and weight are extremely important factors on a vessel. We see a strong need for this type of solution, and the marine industry has been very open to the new technology. Reduced weight matters, but so does freeing up more space for increased cargo capacity,” says Cajsa Jonsson.

Reducing reliance on critical raw materials

Many high performance electric motors use permanent magnets containing rare earth elements. Eliro’s design makes it possible to use alternatives such as ferrite magnets, whose raw materials are available in Europe. This could enable a European supply chain and reduce dependence on materials from China.

“We want to create a motor that is not only smaller and lighter, but also better from a resource and production perspective. The design also makes the motor easy to disassemble and reassemble, which simplifies recycling,” says Cajsa Jonsson.

Eliro’s initial focus is on motors for bow thrusters and shaft propulsion systems. Longer term, the same demand for smaller and lighter electric motors exists across large parts of the electrified transport industry.

From Chalmers research to company

The technology originated at Chalmers University of Technology, where cofounders Jesper Bergström and Ruben Willner developed the new motor geometry as part of their master’s thesis. Chalmers Ventures has invested in the company and sees potential in both the technology and its market.

“We chose to invest in Eliro because they are developing a new type of electric motor with the potential to solve several of the challenges associated with today’s solutions. Combined with the strong growth in electrification, we see significant potential in both the technology and the company,” says Gia Kourouklidou, Pre-seed Investment & Venture Creation Manager at Chalmers Ventures.

First physical prototype is the next step

A patent application for the technology was filed in December 2025 and the results to date are based on simulations. Eliro plans to build its first physical prototype in autumn 2026.

“The simulations show what the technology can achieve, but when we talk to potential customers, they naturally want something they can see and test. That is why the physical prototype will be a very important step for us,” says Cajsa Jonsson.

The plan is to further develop the prototype together with a potential customer as part of a pilot project. Longer term, Eliro aims to establish its technology as a new standard for electrified transport.

“Our long term ambition is to become a new benchmark in the industry and to develop the entire powertrain, including components such as batteries and converters,” concludes Cajsa Jonsson.
