The Children's Climate Prize was established in 2016 and the first prize was awarded to the then 16-year-old climate activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez from Colorado, USA. You can watch clips from his appearance on Skavlan on SVT.

Last year, a record number of entries were received from 24 countries, and it were the USA, India, and Mexico who dominated the entries in 2020. The final winners were Vinisha Umashankar, 14 years and Aadya Joshi, 17 years, both from India. Vinisha was awarded for her innovative idea of solar-powered ironing carts and Aadya for her biodiversity project: The Right Green. The two girls received global recognition for their initiatives and have now been able to further develop their projects.

"Before I won the Children's Climate Prize, nobody knew anything about me or my solar-powered ironing cart. But after just a few months, a lot of people from all over the world have shown their support and love for me and my idea, which means a lot," says Vinisha Umashankar, winner of the Children’s Climate Prize 2020.

On 4 June, the nomination period for the year will close and the jury will then have the difficult task of selecting finalists and winner from among this year's entries. The winner is announced in autumn 2021. Since 2020, the Children’s Climate Foundation awards the prize each year.
