The rise and fall of structures in Cirkus Cirkör's new production
Demand is high, and expectations are soaring for Circus Cirkör's next international touring production. On February 16, 2024, the show "Tipping Point – Balancing in a Time of Change" will have its world premiere in collaboration with Riksteatern as part of CirkusExpo and CirkusMania. Following that, there will be a Swedish tour during the spring, with a continuous performance period at venues such as Stora Teatern in Gothenburg, and then the production goes on tour internationally.
– We encounter tremendous enthusiasm when we are performing. When we inaugurated the Letní Letná festival in Prague in August, there were around 30,000 people in the audience - and 1.5 million have viewed the clips on social media. The interest in what Cirkör will come up with next is enormous, says Kajsa Giertz, CEO of Circus Cirkör.
The director of Cirkör's new performance is Alexander Weibel Weibel, a circus artist who has been involved in several productions at Cirkör directed by Tilde Björfors (such as Borders, Satyagraha, and Knitting Peace – the last one is still playing for sold-out venues around the world).
"Tipping Point – Balancing in a Time of Change" will be a circus show that challenges and stretches the structures that hold our society together, such as democracy, peace, and a sustainable environment. Why do these structures look the way they do? What keeps them in balance? Is it possible to build new ones, and how do we do it? And what happens when the most fundamental elements collapse? Who gets caught, and who finds freedom?
– I explore and use the structural principle of tensegrity as a metaphor in this piece. In such a model, form is held together by tensions, balance, and forces pulling in different directions. The slightest change can cause the entire structure to collapse," says Alexander Weibel Weibel, continuing:
– The ensemble and I are currently in an exciting creative phase, developing new disciplines and building new technical elements. The innovative aspect of this production is very exciting to work with," concludes Alexander, who is currently on a European tour with Knitting Peace.
– We are delighted that Alexander is directing the show. He has assembled an exciting creative team and a cast of prominent and innovative circus artists. We see it as an important part of Circus Cirkör's artistic vision to continue letting new talents flourish." says Kajsa Giertz.
The full tour of Sweden with venues and dates will be announced later this autumn. Stora Teatern in Gothenburg will release its tickets at the end of November 2023. CirkusMania will release its program and tickets in December 2023.
About Alexander Weibel Weibel
Alexander is a Spanish-born circus artist, director, and musician. He received training at the circus school in Madrid, the National Circus School of Moscow, and the Dance and Circus University College (DOCH) in Stockholm. He has been granted several awards at major circus festivals worldwide.
Alexander has worked with Circus Cirkör for many years, most notably as a balance artist, acrobat, and musician in productions like Knitting Peace, Borders, and Satyagraha.
Alexander Weibel Weibel, who has previously studied engineering, is keenly interested in technology research. In 2015, he earned an MA in artistic research from Stockholm University of the Arts, from which he created the performance "Breaking Point," which toured Europe.
