Press release -

Django Girls to Umeå – international programming workshop for women

This autumn Codemill will be bringing Django Girls to Sweden for the first time ever. Django Girls is a one-day workshop for people who are new to programming and is primarily targeted at people who identify themselves as women, to make the IT-world more gender equal.

– We've been thinking about this for quite some time now: we really like Django and we really need to bring more women into programming. Django Girls is a perfect match for this purpose and the Django-community in whole is very including and welcoming, says Ludvig Wadenstein, developer/UX-designer at Codemill.

The workshop will take place Saturday 26 November at Codemill's office in Umeå. Annica Lindström and Ludvig Wadenstein, developers and UX-designers at Codemill, are head organizers of the event, with help from six colleagues participating as coaches. The workshop is coach intensive using one coach per three participants, which is why we have a limit of 20 participants for now.

Why are we doing this?

We belive that our male-dominated industry would benefit greatly by bringing more non-males into it. At Codemill we use Django extensively and are a part of the Django community, and we have seen Django Girls do amazing things for women in tech. At a DjangoCon in Cardiff last year, we got inspired to arrange Django Girls Umeå to further contribute to the work for gender equality in tech.

– It's very easy to picture programming as something very nerdy, that you're just sitting in some basement drinking coke. I want to show a different kind of picture: that it's more about problem solving and maybe even changing the world, says Annica Lindström, developer/UX-designer at Codemill.

Do you want to sponsor?

This is a non-profit event, and we want to make it as great as possible for the participants! We want to provide food, fika, goodiebags, and special Django-guests – and if we can invite some global Django Girls-volunteers, we can host more participants! To do this, we need to fly them here and give them accommodation. If you want to sponsor any part of this, please contact Ludvig and Annica at umea@djangogirls.org
