Kellogg and DHL expand European partnership

DHL Solution takes over Kellogg’s German logistics center in Bremen DHL Solutions and the Kellogg Company, the world’s leading producer of cereals, have expanded their alliance in Europe. DHL Solutions has taken over Kellogg’s German logistics center in Bremen, handling both national transportation and the facility’s management. The outsourcing project is part of Kellogg’s overall European strategy. The company has been working with express logistics giant DHL in France, Italy, Spain and the Benelux countries for many years. “We wanted a one-stop solution and a well established European network. DHL gives us both,” says Rainer Frerich, Head of Supply Chain at the Kellogg Company. The innovative logistics strategy offers Kellogg direct shipment distribution from the production sites for its European markets, creating a flexible system which allows for centralized or decentralized shipping according to need. "This will provide us with considerable advantages in the area of Customer Service and add a higher level of transparency in the processes and goods dispatch,” states Frerich. “We developed the so-called Control Tower Concept for Kellogg,” explains Michael Engler, Head of Marketing & Sales at DHL Solutions Germany. Following the “Merge-in-Transit” principle it will be possible to consolidate a client’s order, with the products coming from various production sites, at one centralized location in the vicinity of the client. “This innovative logistics strategy will be implemented step-by-step,” according so Engler. “In addition, together with Kellogg we will be looking at optimizing logistics processes throughout all of Europe,” comments Engler on a further aspect of the partnership. The high-bay warehouse, with storage space for some 32,000 pallets, is located on the premises of Kellogg’s production facility in Bremen. Over the course of a year hundreds of thousands of pallets comprising 450 different products are handled from this site and shipped to more than 50 countries worldwide. DHL Solutions also took on the 57 employees already working in this sector at the Kellogg Company.
