Reeds from the Baltic Sea transformed to garden mulch in new Täckvass from Weibulls
Weibulls is now launching Täckvass, a natural mulching material made from common reed harvested from the Baltic Sea. A smart gardening cover solution that contributes to improved coastal environments, enhanced biodiversity and supports a more circular ecosystem. Täckvass is a collaboration between Weibulls and Race For The Baltic, an independent non-profit that accelerates
solutions for a healthier Baltic Sea.
- The potential of reeds is enormous, and Täckvass showcases one of the ways it can be used in a circular and smart manner, while also helping to reduce eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. It’s a win-win, says Mattias Persson, Product Developer at Evergreen Garden Care.
- Reed is a versatile, renewable, and a underutilized material. Using it in garden products is a
clever way to create environmental benefits for the Baltic Sea, says Anil Ramel Singh, Project
Manager at Race For The Baltic.
Täckvass one of the solutions to eutrophication
The Baltic Sea is suffering from eutrophication caused by excessive nutrient levels in the water, leading to algal blooms, oxygen depletion, dead seabeds and declining biodiversity. Reed beds across
the Baltic region are expanding at an unsustainable rate, contributing to the imbalance of coastal
ecosystems.
By harvesting reed, coastal habitats are restored, biodiversity improves and nutrients are recirculated
from sea to land. Race For The Baltic actively works with reed harvesting as a measure against
eutrophication, and Täckvass now becomes an important application for utilizing the harvested
material.
What is Täckvass?
Täckvass is a natural mulching material for gardening and cultivation. It consists of reed growing
naturally along coastlines, lakes, and wetlands, particularly around the Baltic Sea. The reed is
harvested and processed by Weibulls’ partner RAWS Sweden, and then packaged by Weibulls. The
reed grows naturally without fertilizers or irrigation, making it a local and renewable solution for
more sustainable gardening. Täckvass is available at weibulls.com and in selected gardening retail
stores
What can Täckvass be used for?
Täckvass is used as soil cover in flower beds, raised beds, vegetable gardens and around shrubs and
perennials. It helps maintain the quality in the soil, reduces the need for weeding and makes gardening
easier to manage. At the same time, it creates a natural and beautiful appearance in the garden
Collaboration with Race For The Baltic
Täckvass is developed in collaboration with Race For The Baltic, a non-profit working for a healthier
Baltic Sea with a focus on combating eutrophication.
