Swedish Startup Offers Open Source Alternative as AI-Powered Coding Tools Boom

Open Source Cloud lets developers build software with AI assistance while avoiding vendor lock-in.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – January 2025 – As AI tools that help people build software gain mainstream attention, Swedish company Eyevinn Technology is positioning its Open Source Cloud platform as the transparent alternative to proprietary competitors.

The company has launched application hosting capabilities that allow AI assistants to not only write code but also set up and manage the entire technical infrastructure needed to run it—databases, file storage, and backend services. The key difference from competitors: everything runs on open source software that users can inspect, modify, or take elsewhere.

The Trend: AI Is Changing Who Can Build Software

A wave of new tools—including Lovable, Bolt, and Replit—now let people describe an application in plain English and watch AI build it. These platforms have attracted millions of users and significant venture funding, signaling a shift in how software gets made. But critics note a tradeoff: the convenience comes with dependency on proprietary systems. If the platform changes its pricing, policies, or shuts down, users may struggle to move their projects elsewhere.

The Pitch: Speed Without Lock-In

Open Source Cloud offers a catalog of over 150 open source tools as ready-to-use services—databases, media processing, storage, and business applications. Developers can now also host their own custom applications on the platform, with AI assistants able to orchestrate the entire setup.

"There's a real tension in the market right now," said Jonas Birmé of Eyevinn Technology. "Developers want the speed that AI tools provide, but they're wary of building on platforms they don't control. We're offering both: let AI handle the complexity, but keep everything on open source you can take with you."

Because the underlying software is open source, users can export their data, inspect how services work, or move to their own servers if they choose. The platform also shares revenue with the open source developers whose projects power the services.

How It Works

A developer using an AI assistant* like Claude or ChatGPT can connect it to Open Source Cloud. The AI can then set up databases, configure storage, and deploy applications based on natural language instructions—for example, "create a database for my customer list and deploy my web app that uses it."

The company says this reduces what traditionally required specialized infrastructure expertise to something a single developer—or even a non-technical founder—can accomplish with AI assistance.

Market Context

The AI-assisted development market has exploded. Lovable, a Swedish competitor, recently announced a $330 million Series B at a $6.6 billion valuation, backed by investors including CapitalG, Menlo Ventures, and the venture arms of NVIDIA, Salesforce, and Atlassian. The company says users create over 100,000 new projects daily on its platform.

But as these platforms scale, so do concerns about dependency. Lovable and similar tools run on proprietary infrastructure—if pricing changes or the company pivots, users have limited options.

Open Source Cloud is targeting developers who want similar AI-powered capabilities but prefer infrastructure they fully control. Because everything runs on open source software, users can export their projects, inspect the code, or move to self-hosted alternatives at any time.

Availability

The platform is available now with a free tier. The company is based in Stockholm and specializes in media technology.
