Flo Kasearu to Färgfabriken – new exhibition and ticket release for anniversary party

This autumn, Färgfabriken presents Flo Kasearu’s first major exhibition in Sweden: BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone) – a sharp and humorous take on change and security. Tickets are now also on sale for Färgfabriken’s anniversary party on August 23 – a full evening of art, music, and celebration.

Flo Kasearu – BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone)

On September 13 Färgfabriken opens the major solo exhibition of the autumn with Estonian artist Flo Kasearu. BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone) marks the first major presentation of Kasearu’s work in Sweden. The exhibition addresses fears of change – and the importance of neighborhood in a time of constant transformation.

What if a high-rise is planned in your neighborhood? What if all your friends move away? What if public space keeps shrinking? Should I put up a fence around what’s mine? What if my house gets washed away or the internet cable gets cut again? What if I no longer recognize my surroundings and everything just feels BANANA?!

In the exhibition Flo Kasearu explores everyday life when confronted with change – and the fears that come with it. With a distinctive mix of irony, humor, and absurd logic, Kasearu invites reflection on humanity’s resistance to the unknown, while examining notions of safety, control, and belonging

Kasearu critically examines how urban development and green energy initiatives reshape landscapes. The exhibition consists of both older and newly produced works that weave together the personal and the societal that have characterised Kasearu's artistic practice since its inception with the site-specific work Flo Kasearu House museum in Tallinn. In the exhibition at Färgfabriken, we are invited to an artistic exploration of the emotions that arise when the familiar is shaken up - when a new building is planned in the neighbourhood, when old houses are demolished, or when wind turbines rise on the horizon. Symbols of future, sustainability and progress become simultaneously projections of anxiety, loss and conflict.

About the artist

Flo Kasearu has studied painting and art at the Estonian Academy of Arts, as well as at Rebecca Horn’s multimedia studio at the Berlin University of the Arts. In addition to private collections, her works can be found at the Estonian Art Museum, Tartu Art Museum, Kiasma, the European Central Bank and the Flo Kasearus House Museum.

The factory building in Lövholmen was constructed in 1889 by the engineering company Palmcrantz & Co and was originally used for manufacturing equipment such as reapers and seed drills. In 1902, the paint company Wilhelm Becker moved into the building and took over production – giving rise to the name Färgfabriken.

Extensive renovations were carried out in the mid-1990s, and in 1995 Färgfabriken opened its doors to the public with its first exhibition. Since then, Färgfabriken has worked in an exploratory and innovative way, with a particular focus on the intersections between art and architecture – aiming to open up space for new ideas, narratives, and perspectives.
