Finnair traffic grew 16.2 percent last year

Finnair total traffic, measured in passenger kilometers, grew 16.2% in 2007. The total number of passengers transported by Finnair Group airlines was over 8.6 million, which is 5.3% more than the comparable figure a year before. Passenger load factor was on last year’s level 75.5%. In December 2007, traffic increased by 18.1% and capacity by 18.3%. Number of passengers carried on Finnair flights was 608 483, which is 4.8% more than a year ago. Finnair scheduled traffic increased last year by 22.6%. Asian traffic was up by 32.6%. Finnair’s Asian flights carried more than 1.1 million passengers. Nine percent of all Finnair long-haul passengers traveled in business class. Finnair scheduled flights carried totally some 7.5 million passengers. Passenger load factor was 72.9, which is 1.3 percentage points higher than in previous year. In December, scheduled traffic grew 18.8% compared to last year and passenger load factor was at the same level as in the previous year, 68.6%. During the last quarter of 2007, unit revenue (euro cent/RPK) in scheduled traffic decreased approximately by three percent due to mix change between long-haul and short-haul traffic. Finnair's Tallinn-based subsidiary Aero AS, carried 14 380 passengers (- 57.3%) on routes between Helsinki and the Baltic capitals and within Southern Finland. Aero figures are respectively included in Finnair Group total figures. At the end of June, Finnair sold its Stockholm-based subsidiary airline FlyNordic and its traffic performance is no longer reported as part of Finnair Group statistics. For better comparison, equivalent figures for last year have been adjusted accordingly. In December, 72.9% of Finnair scheduled flights arrived on time, 5.5 points lower than in December 2006. Including leisure flights arrival punctuality was 69.3% (-6.9 p.p). 12-month arrival punctuality of Finnair scheduled flights in 2007 was 80.4%. Including leisure flights arrival punctuality was 78.6%. Scheduled traffic In scheduled traffic (international + domestic) revenue passenger kilometres increased by 18.8%. The change in capacity was 19.4%. Passenger load factor was 68.6%, 0.3 percentage points lower than last year. In scheduled international traffic, total number of passengers was up by 13.6%. Capacity in ASKs was 22.9%, while RPKs increased by 21.8%. In European scheduled traffic, ASKs increased by 16.4%, and as RPKs increased by 13.5%, the passenger load factor was 63.0%, down 1.7 points from previous year. In North Atlantic scheduled traffic, capacity increased by 4.6%. Change in RPKs was 15.6%, and passenger load factor for December was 84.1%, 7.9 points higher than previous year. In Asian scheduled traffic, capacity increase was 28.9%. The passenger traffic was up by 27.3%. Passenger load factor was 71.7%, 0.9 percentage points down. Domestic scheduled traffic decreased by 12.7% on a capacity decrease of 13.5%. Passenger load factor increased by 0.5 percentage points to 60.9%. Leisure traffic ASKs for leisure traffic increased in December by 15.5%, and RPKs increased by 16.5%, resulting in a passenger load factor of 93.9%, 0.8 points higher than last year. Cargo Cargo traffic increased by 14.2% in terms of cargo tonnes carried. Growth in scheduled traffic was 26.0%. Increase in Asian traffic was 44.4%. Volume in European traffic increased by 0.9%. In North-Atlantic traffic cargo volume increased by 4.3%. Cargo traffic carried on chartered cargo flights decreased by 69.2%. The cargo load factor was 33.0%. The cargo load factor in the Asian traffic was 73.9% and in the North Atlantic traffic 78.1%.
