Galleri deBernardo is proud to present the first solo exhibition of fine art photography artist Gabriel Isak in Sweden.

Swedish photographer Gabriel Isak found himself drawn to photography in 2006 as a way to battle through depression and express his deeper state of mind. Graduating from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography in 2016, it was there that he developed his distinctive style combining surrealism with melancholy in the fine art genre. With his work, Gabriel aims to shine a light on mental health and human experiences that people deal with daily. After seven years abroad, Gabriel returned to Sweden in 2019 and the coming exhibition at Galleri deBernardo will be his first in Sweden.

The exhibition features selected photographs from different series of work and will be on display until 13 March.

Into the Blue  – Artist’s Statement

Into the Blue presents works from a few different series in which I invite the viewer to interact with the inner world of solitary figures that symbolize our own unconscious states. The figures are imprisoned in surreal and melancholic scenes that are rich in symbolism. I’ve used photography as a medium to draw and paint surreal imagery, focusing on themes inspired by psychology, dreams, existentialism and my past experiences with depression.

Into the Blue leads you through a serene and melancholic introspective journey that stills the chaos of life and questions the depths of human existence. The subjects are anonymous so the spectator can envision oneself as the subject, reflecting back on one’s own experiences and journey in life. The objective of my work is to shine a light on the experiences of being and the states of mind those bring along.
