From Richter to Radiohead - Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra reveals Season 2026-2027

Classical jewels from our most beloved composers, as well as iconic songs from In Flames, Radiohead and First Aid Kit – all can be found in Gothenburg Concert Hall in the fall of 2026 and spring of 2027. More than 90 new concerts are now available.

Víkingur Ólafsson, Anna von Hausswolff, Janine Jansen, Karina Canellakis and the Berliner Philharmoniker –these are some of the stars awaiting the Gothenburg audience next season. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra offers classical masterpieces such as Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and No. 5, Beethoven's 3rd and 7th and Allan Pettersson's mighty 7th, Brahms' Ein deutches Requiem, as well as music by Boulanger, Bach and Rachmaninoff.

- The Gothenburg Concert Hall and the Symphony Orchestra are a world-class concert hall and orchestra, and this is reflected in next season's program. Here are the great classics, international guest performances and our principal guest conductors Barbara Hannigan and Pekka Kuusisto, says Anna-Karin Larsson, CEO of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

The Swedish National Orchestra is presenting several world premieres, with new music by composers Anders Hillborg, Ming Tsao and Helen Grime. Also featured is the Swedish premiere of Max Richter's organ concerto written for viral organist Anna Lapwood, a co-commission by the GSO.

The season includes music by the greatest contemporary Swedish composers - such as Mats Larsson Gothe's cello concerto, Daniel Nelson's Chaplin Songs and Andrea Tarrodi's Birds of Paradise. Returning favorite conductors include Herbert Blomstedt, Marie Jacquot and Kent Nagano, alongside world-class soloists such as Håkan Hardenberger, Augustin Hadelich, Akiko Suwanai, Peter Jablonski and Nils Landgren.

Challenging traditions

A series of cross-border concerts are coming up, where rock music meets the full power of the symphony orchestra. In the concert The Gothenburg Sound, the orchestra takes on iconic death metal from bands like In Flames and At the Gates – music that put Gothenburg on the music map forever.

On May 21, 2027, we travel to the universe of the British band Radiohead, when the 30th anniversary album OK Computer is celebrated with symphonic arrangements in the concert From A Great Height. But first, a meeting between the Gothenburg Symphony and the immensely popular Swedish duo First Aid Kit in two sold out concerts in Gothenburg and two in London, Royal Albert Hall in September.

Music in motion

Polar Prize laureate of 2025 Barbara Hannigan returns to her long time partner Gothenburg Symphony with two of her most acclaimed performances performed all over the world - the one-act opera La voix humaine and Ligeti's Mystéries of the Macabre.

The theme of the GSO season 2026-2027 is movement - because music contributes to a society where people come together, listen and shape the future together.

- The ability of an orchestra to place us in a different temporal context, one work at a time, is a massive gift in the age of shortened attention spans and news alerts, says Pekka Kuusisto, also principal guest conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony since 2025.

The popular theme subscriptions also continue in Gothenburg Concert Hall, with the slightly shorter concerts in the successful Classical AW and new favorites in Jazz, World, Organ and Family.

- Movement, tradition and innovation. A season I am happy about and proud of. I look forward to meeting the best audience in the country, says CEO Anna-Karin Larsson.
