Katrín Hall to stay on as Artistic Director Dance at GöteborgsOperans Danskompani

Now it is finalised – Katrín Hall's appointment as Artistic Director Dance at GöteborgsOperans Danskompani has been extended.

"I'm extremely pleased and proud to get to keep Katrín Hall on as artistic director of our fantastic dance company. Ever since she joined us in 2016, her visions and artistic compass have been major factors in sealing the dance company's current position as one of Europe's most highly recognised contemporary dance companies, attracting the most sought-after choreographers and dancers. She's also worked wholeheartedly to make our home audience, in Region Västra Götaland, feel that this is their very own dance company. Public success and critical acclaim, on both our main stage and international tours, have been followed by regional tours. With open rehearsals, public dialogues, physical introductions and a very recently completed and successful dance festival, she's paved the way for a new and large audience to become intimate with dance," says Christina Björklund, CEO of the Göteborg Opera.

Icelandic Katrín Hall was appointed Artistic Director Dance at GöteborgsOperans Danskompani in the autumn of 2016 on a four-year contract. Her appointment has now been extended by another four years, from 2020 to 2024.

"Getting GöteborgsOperans Danskompani to where it is today has entailed a long journey over a long time. I'm extremely proud to be able to lead this exceptional dance company – these unique artists who are the dancers – for another four years and to jointly face the challenge of maintaining our position. If we're to succeed, then we have to remain audacious enough to take risks and remain a company with a clear identity, a strong voice, much courage and a big heart. Right now, there's no place in the world of dance that I'd rather be than here, as the leader of a dance company that gives its all, both artistically and personally," says Katrín Hall.

GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is the largest Nordic and one of the leading European contemporary dance companies, gathering 38 dancers from all over the world. In 2018, the company received two prestigious awards: the Swedish Theatre Critics' Association's Dance Prize 2017 (the first time the prize was awarded to a company) and the prize for the Magical Performance of the Year category at the Swedish Performing Arts Gala.

During the 2018/2019 season, the company set records in both attendance and number of productions: no fewer than twelve dance works – comprising five premières, three revival premières and four other works performed on tour in Paris, London, Turin, Madrid, Pamplona, Porto and several cities in China.

The 2019/2020 season begins already on 6 August, with the company performing on the main stage at the Gothenburg Culture Festival. Later in the year, 11 October will see the Swedish and world première of Virus/Love, two dance works by Ohad Naharin and Roni Haver/Guy Weizman, while March 2020 will herald a double world première for Yoann Bourgeois and the duo Honji Wang/Sébastien Ramirez with the Beyond evening of dance.
