Streamlined process accessing samples for genetic analysis at KI Biobank

To support one of their key applications in biobanking, KI Biobank has invested in Hamilton's new ChemagicSTAR system for high throughput nucleic acid (NA) purification. The chemagic STAR combines chemagen's leading NA purification system with the best automated liquid handling technology to offer fully automated operation in one benchtop system. Due to Chemagen's proprietary Polyvinyl Alcohol particles (M-PVA Magnetic Beads) this extraction technology yields ultrapure nucleic acids.

Standardized workflow with full process control

ChemagicSTAR offers validated solutions for NA extraction with a unique flexibility in sample volume (20ul up to 10ml) and supports a wide variety of sample material such as blood, plasma, buffy coat, saliva, cells, tissue and buccal swabs. With the ChemagicSTAR system, Hamilton offers a standardized work-flow with full process control and data tracking to support the demanding requirements for sample integrity.

 Today KI Biobank has 3 ChemagicSTAR systems, 2 units running low volume NA extraction from blood (400ul) and 1 unit for medium volume applications (up to 4ml). All systems are fully integrated with LIMS and have 1D and 2D barcode reading to track samples from primary tubes to final destination plates. More than 80,000 samples have been extracted so far in these systems.

Exceptional throughput

The systems are giving KI biobank a big advantage in the capacity to handle samples for modern genetic analyses. The process is very stream-lined and effective. The throughput is exceptional: in little more than eighteen months, KI biobank has made over 80,000 DNA extractions from whole blood for several big, new studies. Some of them have already been used in advanced analyses with promising results.
The national Swedish biobanking initiative, BBMRI.se will  benefit from this contribution of yield and quality from KI Biobank.
