Huawei smartphone growth up 435% in Sweden

Stockholm, May 10th, 2016  In the latest Q1 2016 global smartphone market reports, Strategy Analytics and International Data Corporation (IDC) listed Huawei as the third top-selling device maker worldwide. GFK also noted that Huawei/Honor's smartphone sell out showed significant growth with 435% in Sweden, when comparing Q1 2015 to Q1 2016. In Q1 2016, Huawei/Honor's market share reached 5,4% in Sweden.

These findings showcase the growth and momentum of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, which shipped over 28.3 million units during Q1 2016, a 64 percent increase year-over-year. Most notably, Huawei was the only device maker among the top three to maintain rapid growth, as total global smartphone shipments decreased three percent compared to Q1 2015. Huawei also announced that it recorded effective growth in the Central-European and Nordic region according to GFK’s analysis carried out in 15 countries.

New flagship smartphones firm Huawei’s top-three position
According to Huawei’s Q1 fiscal report, the company’s shipments surged 44 percent year-over-year, while its sales grew 61 percent. IDC data shows that at the end of Q1 2016, Huawei held 8.5 percent market share, compared to five percent a year ago.

In Q1 2016, Huawei launched a new flagship phone, the Huawei P9, equipped with a dual-lens camera co-engineered by the renowned camera brand, Leica. Heading into Q2 2016, the P9 will further Huawei’s growth in the global medium and high-end smartphone market. Data already shows the P9 surpassed its predecessor, the Huawei P8, in sales within the first week its launch.

Dynamic growth in the CEE & Nordic Region
According to GFK’s POS Measurement reports Huawei including the Honor brand recorded effective growth in the CEE & Nordic Region: the company reached a volume market share of 11.6% in the region in Q1 2016, an increase in Huawei/Honor Smartphones sell-out of 293% comparing Q1/2016 with Q1/2015.

GFK noted that Huawei/Honor`s smartphone sell out showed significant growth in the examined countries as well with increase (in comparison of the same period last year) of 124% in the Czech Republic, 118% in Denmark, 512% in Finland, 214% in Greece, 82% in Norway, 833% in Poland, 252% in Romania and 435% in Sweden. Austria showed the largest market share growth with an increase of 1144%. In Q1 2016, Huawei/Honor`s market share reached 5,4% in Sweden.

The analysis shows that Huawei’s strategy of focusing on premium mid- to-high end products has been successful. According to the GfK POS measurement report the most popular Huawei/Honor smartphone in the region is P8 Lite: in the first quarter of 2016 it ranked high amongst the top 10 devices that represent 27% of the market.

The analysis shows a growing trend that smartphones with bigger screens are becoming more popular, especially sizes between 5” and 5.5”. Whereas in Q1 2015 the market share of screen size between 5” and 5.5” was 22% in the Nordic and Central-European region, by the first three months of 2016 it doubled.

All GfK data are based on GfK POS measurement data for Smartphones, sales units based, GfK Panelmarket, for the periods Q1/2016 (January-March 2016) and Q1/2015 (January-March 2015) covering the markets Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Israel, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (CEE) and Denmark, Finland, Sweden (Nordic).
