Siri Ahlzén received an ICLD fieldwork grant in 2018 and did her fieldwork in Zambia. Her thesis, ‘Understanding corruption through social norms – A field study about corrupt behaviour in local institutions in Lusaka’, aimed to explore the role of social norms in fighting corruption. Here she shares her reflections on her experience and the findings of her research.
11 svenska kommuner och regioner får dela på totalt 10 641 000 kronor för internationella demokratisamarbeten genom programmet Kommunala partnerskap. Programmet möjliggör för svenska kommuner och regioner att, tillsammans med en internationell samarbetspart, stödja den lokala demokratiutvecklingen i respektive kommun. Det är ICLD, Internationellt Centrum för Lokal Demokrati som fördelar pengarna.
- Det är dags att vi på allvar låter unga människor får inflytande över allt det som påverkar deras framtid. Aktivt och systematisk arbete för ungdomsinflytande på kommunal och regional nivå, är något som sätter de mänskliga rättigheterna i centrum, säger Johan Lilja, ICLDs generalsekreterare, med anledning av det årliga firandet av den Internationella dagen för mänskliga rättigheter.
Democracy works best when all voices can be heard. No voice should be left behind. Yet, the voices of children and youth are far too often muted although they make up roughly 1/3 of the world’s population.
Laura Betancur Alarcón received an ICLD fieldwork grant in 2018. Her thesis, ‘Peace in the peaks? Changes in water and land distribution in Colombia’s southern highlands during the Post-Peace Agreement phase’, aimed at understanding how grassroots initiatives are formed and adapted to deal with peace and sustainability challenges in the post-conflict period in Colombia.
Since 2014, ICLD has run the advanced international training program “Capacitating local leaders in Zimbabwe”. For Gertrude Gumbo, former participant, now Councillor in Umguza Rural District Council in Zimbabwe, the programme has transformed both herself and her council.

Researcher of the ICLD-funded study ‘Organising grassroots initiatives for a more inclusive governance: constructing the city from below’, Maria Jose Zapata Campos, visited Kenya at the end of August to present the findings of the research. While there she also had the opportunity to present the report to the City Manager in Kisumu and officers at the County and discuss the findings with them.
ICLD driver Internationella Utbildningsprogram, ITP, som är längre, kvalificerade utbildningsinsatser som vänder sig till nyckelpersoner på lokal nivå i Sidas samarbetsländer, till exempel lokala politiker och tjänstepersoner.
