Ice Box Challenge 2025 – with amazing results!

We’re excited to highlight a remarkable achievement from the Ice Box Challenge 2025: The smallest team delivered the best ice-results! 🏆❄️

Our dedicated students from Mittuniversitetet Martina Fredin (projectleader), Alice Küla and Jakob Wallinder – guided by supervisor Sven Wadman, designed and built two test houses:
  • One following standard building regulations, using conventional building materials.
  • One built to the passive house standard, using innovative and sustainable materials:

Walls: IsoTimber wall panels made partly from residual production material, enabling long-term biogenic carbon storage and providing high thermal mass. Additionally insulated with cellulose boards from iCell

Foundation: Foam glass from EVIA – made from recycled glass with low climate impact.

Roof: Lightweight beams from MasoniteBeams, insulated with cellulose – both materials with low climate impact.

✅ The IsoTimber-house can be disassembled and reused, a vital aspect of how to contribute to a circular building sector.

--> Only 20% of the ice melted in the passive house located at Jamtli in Östersund, May 15 to June 6 (23 days).
--> In comparison, 60% of the ice melted in the conventional house during the same time.

Huge applause to all student-teams for your impressive efforts and commitment! 🎉 Special congratulations to the overall winning team: Sub Zero Studio from Luleå Tekniska Universitet!
