Resilience should be your Supply Chain’s focus: Technology can help.

With supply chain management becoming a central element of driving top-line revenue, organizations globally should be focusing-in on addressing the risks their supply chains are prone to, before risk can materialize.

A recent post from Supply Chain Management Review, published last week, highlights the growing importance for an agile shift away from the traditional ideals of supply chain management.

The ‘Business World’ is not what it once was, and the impacts of globalization, supply chain complexity, consumer concerns, trading shifts, geopolitical issues and populism have taken a toll on the global supply chain. For those who have come out the other side, there is still a lot of work to be done to avoid the standard turmoil supply chains are inherently prone to. The true challenge for these organizations lies within putting methods into motion to create a sustainable, responsible and scalable future for the global supply chain

My grandmother used to say to me, “You want something done right, give it to a busy person.”

Supply chain managers are the epitome of a ‘busy person’, in a business. External and internal pressures have made the supply chain manager of today into a position between a rock and a hard place. SCM is a domain expected to scale top-line growth, without compromising bottom-line, and all the while keep in mind sustainability.

Luckily, technology has evolved in order to aid SCM. Supply chain managers have a plethora of technology at their disposal for creating comprehensive strategies and actions, geared towards risk management and supply chain resilience.

"It takes a broad suite of tools to effectively manage a supply chain today, including everything from software and systems specializing in logistics, data analytics and inventory management to tools enabling demand forecasting, freight management and ensuring security and beyond" (Monahan and Gott 2018).

Accepting shifts in technology could very well serve as the corner piece for addressing supply chain risks in the global supply chain.
