Will Technology take your job?

A recent report by the World Trade Organization (WTO), titled “Trade, Technology and Jobs” raises questions of the digitalization of the shifting business landscape.

Supply Chain Management Review posted an article, yesterday, to further these questions regarding SCM-related challenges and professions.

“The upcoming wave of technological advances, in particular artificial intelligence and robotics, raises a number of issues, including their impact on the future of jobs” (Burnson 2017).

While this realization is exciting for business optimization, supply chain efficiency and technology vendors - the reality is – thousands (if not millions) of jobs will be lost due to the coming advancements in technology.

Adaptation of professions and education for younger generations will play a crucial role in the transition of the human work force, as we know it today.

Some experts have estimated that technologies such as AI and robotics have already had an impact of 5% job loss in 2017. These numbers are only expected to grow.

“Four years ago, an Oxford University study predicted 47% of jobs could be automated by 2033. Even the near-term outlook has been quite negative: A 2016 report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said 9% of jobs in the 21 countries that make up its membership could be automated” (hbr.org).

Amongst these jobs are positions such as factory workers, truck drivers, financial managers, retail workers and more. It seems as if few professions will be safe in the future of automation and digital transformation.

This raises the question: Will technology take your job?
