ENMESHED: ARCHITECTURE AND TEXTILES IN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN PRACTICE A symposium that will bring together an international group of architects, designers, historians, and theorists to explore the complex relationship between textiles and textile technologies and architecture in the context of contemporary design. The conference will open with a keynote speech, “Petrified Curtains,” by New York design historian and theorist Susan Yelavich. This will be followed by an extended presentation and film screening by renowned designer and director of the Amsterdam-based Inside Outside studio, Petra Blaisse. Enmeshed continues on 25/9 with three sessions dedicated to exploring different aspects of the entwined relationship between architecture and textiles: Pliable Planes: Munich-based designer Sylvie Krüger and Swedish architect and textile designer Ulrika Mårtensson will address the role and relationship between architecture and textiles in historical and spatial contexts. Smart and Soft: London designer Rachel Wingfield of Loop.pH and Patricia Gruits of Boston architecture practice Kennedy & Violich will discuss the roles of technology and sustainability as they relate to architecture and textiles in contemporary practice. Binary Structures: Architect David Serero of Serero Architectes of Paris, New York and Madrid and Mette Ramsgard Thomsen, Director of the Center for Information Technology and Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen will address the implications of textiles and textile technologies with regard to cutting-edge computational design and fabrication strategies and interactive and responsive textile environments.
