Amy Sillman on principles for painting, an ethics of tactility – join her on Zoom!

Konstfack Art Department Lecture Series presents Amy Sillman who will give a newly written talk on her "principles for painting" which can also be said to be an "ethics of tactility".

Amy Sillman (b. 1955, Detroit) is an artist who has lived and worked in NYC since 1975. She earned her BFA in 1979 at SVA in NYC, and her MFA from Bard College in 1995. Sillman's work as a painter is largely based on procedures of drawing and improvisation, but her allegiance is to both the material and discursive histories of contemporary painting, a fleshing out of terrains that lie between things that Sillman describes as "the speaking body." Her aim is to work between supposed binaries, in areas that incorporate both figuration and abstraction, writing and image, and the intimacy of the hand versus larger-scale structures.
Sillman has exhibited regularly in galleries and museums in the USA and Europe since the 90's, and her work is held in many private and public collections including MoMA, The Whitney Museum, LA MoCA, the Brandhorst Museum in Munich, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and The Tate Modern in London. Her mid-career traveling survey show "one lump or two" was curated by Helen Molesworth, originating at The ICA Boston in 2013 and accompanied by a monograph published by Prestel. In October 2019 Sillman curated the notable exhibition “The Shape of Shape" for the re-opening of MoMA, and published a 'zine for the exhibition online with MoMA Magazine. A recent book of her collected texts and drawings entitled "Faux Pas" was published in October 2020 by After Eight Books, Paris.
Sillman’s most recent solo show "Twice Removed" was held this fall at Gladstone Gallery in NYC to wide acclaim, and her work as artist, writer and curator have been written about in recent texts in Artforum, Art News, Texte zur Kunst, and Frieze magazine, among other publications. Sillman is represented by Gladstone Gallery in NYC, and is also associated with Capitain Petzel in Berlin, Thomas Dane in London, Campoli Presti in Paris, and Susanne Vielmetter in LA.
