Brown Island at Konstfack – a resistance towards the white heteronormative environment

BROWN ISLAND
Vernissage Tuesday 21 February 6 pm–late

We are the first student group of people of colour organising at Konstfack. Brown Island is made up of artists from the various departments. The show will include over ten artists from the group, working in different mediums and exploring a number of themes.

Throughout the exhibition week, we will have a number of events coinciding with the show. We have invited poets, performers and groups from outside of the school to participate in events including the opening evening.

The need for a group of artists of colour at Konstfack is apparent when stepping into the white room, Vita Havet. Most of the culture and art institutions in Sweden are homogenous and give little space and room for stories and art of people of colour.

The exhibition is a resistance towards the white heteronormative environment, creating a space curated by and for people of colour. The content of the work reflects our lived experiences and creative expressions.

The exhibition is open 22–26 February. Welcome!
