Nicola Godman explores land ownership, modern architecture and folklore in her MFA solo exhibition

Welcome to the opening of The Spirit, The Lamp & The Permanent Inhabitant, MFA solo exhibition by Nicola Godman at Galleri Konstfack II, Thursday February 4, 5–9 pm

In the old days it was important to keep the fire in your fireplace burning. As the main light and heating source, it was also how you kept the (evil) spirits from entering your home and bringing misfortune. The fire signalled human presence.

Nowadays there are many newly built houses with cold fireplaces, homes that stand empty most of the year. I used to imagine living in one of those empty houses. Around 4 or 5 pm everyday during wintertime, a lamp or two would be turned on in the summer houses. We who lived there all year round knew it was a lamp timer and that nobody was at home.

The exhibition shows new video works and photography that explore ideas concerning land ownership, modern architecture and folklore. The works are results of field research Godman has done where she grew up on northern Gotland, in the off-season and during a month of script writing at Kustateljén film studio in the summer of 2020. The works in the exhibition are a joint investigation into storytelling, filmmaking and local heritage, during her Master’s in Fine Art at Konstfack.

The exhibition is open February 514, Tuesday to Friday 126 pm and Saturday to Sunday 124 pm. Galleri Konstfack II, Tellusgången 12, Telefonplan

Due to Covid-19, a maximum of 8 people are allowed in the exhibition at the same time.
